So along with many living in my area, I am experiencing the worst allergies I have felt in a while. I'm left with a runny nose, itchy watery eyes, strong fatigue, headache and a scratchy throat. I've been doing extra sinus rinses, and I had been taking claritan but switched to zyrtec today because it clearly wasn't working. Are there any prescription meds or even something I something I can find over the counter that WORKS? Any other tips on how to avoid the dreaded pollen in my nose?? THANKS

Hi Lauren, The sinus rinses should help. Switching to a different allergy med like you did might help as well. I don't think that OTC allergy meds work quite as well as prescription even when they say it's the same as the prescribed med. Claritin never really worked for my daughter, Zyrtec worked for a while but then stopped working and now she uses Allegra. Other suggestions would be to not have your windows open, if they have been already then getting a air purifier to clean the air in your home after shutting the windows. You can purchase a small one and just move it from room to room. Also taking a shower before going to bed so you don't get pollen on your sheets and just end up sleeping in it all night long. Lastly, if it's just completely miserable and getting worse and worse every year you might want to look into allergy shots. My oldest, the one with the allergy problems, got them for a while and it helped. Then we moved. Oddly, since she got her transplant they've not been as bad as years past. I hope some of my suggestions help.

My 4 yr old, who this year is showing whose genes he got, is down to Singulair and Claritin. But when pollen season started, he was so bad we were also doing Patanase spray steriod into the nose and Zatador antihistamine eye drops. His eyes were so bad he developed a secondary bacterial eye infection that needed Vigamox.

The only thing that I can think of that is different is that I've started to supplement with Vitamin D3.....2,000mg a day. Maybe it gave my immune system the extra boost it needed.
I don't know....either that or I'm just not real allergic to the stuff that is out there right now. I don't think that is the case though, because when I had allergy testing, I almost passed out just from the scratch portion of it.....I reacted to everything so badly that they never had to inject me with anything.

I have increased by astelin and nasacort to three times during the day and have started using a moisturizing spray before bed. This is in addition to the rinses, avoidance, singulair, and allegra.
I have considered adding zyrtec to the mix if it gets worse but it is drying and did have an affect on me I coudl only notice after I went off of it.

I have had awful allergies too, and they just landed me in the joint (im out now) but I take singular, allegra, nasal rinses, nasacort aq, astilin, and saline nasal spray. I also take chroratimatrone(sp?) when its really bad.
