Allergies

Amy had a lot of good ideas. One of my kids has many allergies and some stuff that has really helped:

-we replaced the carpet in the bedroom w/wood floor
-limit dustmite attracting things in the bedroom-no curtains, stuffed animals, doodads. Every pillow in the bedroom has a dustmite cover (as well as mattresses)
-wash bedsheets every week in hot water

-when there's a lot of pollen I let our dog out a bit less. Animals bring the pollen inside. And if my son is playing outside a lot he'll shower when he comes in.

This really has reduced the amount of meds he needs.

I used to take allergy shots but they didn't seem to help. Maybe I didn't give them enough time but whatever. Now I take Advair and Nasonex and I really only have one or two bad allergy days each season. They have worked wonders for me.

Thanks you guys, lots of good advice!

We just got new mattresses/pillows with anti-mite covers. Both kids have purifiers in their rooms. They do have carpets (which we'd like to pull up), so I'll look into the powder in the meantime. We just purchased a Kirby vacuum to help out on the carpets.
I think allergy testing might be a good idea too.

Hi Amy,

Please tell me more about this:

"it has anti-cholinergic properties. this is a big no-no for CFers. Benedryl as well. "

and this:

" take a leukotriene agonist."

thanks again<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Are they HEPA?

Do they have purifiers in the room where they do their med treatments?

in simple terms, "drying". drying out sputum, which is bad with CFers.

Singulair

Thanks Amy.

Yes, HEPA, and yes they are in the room where they do meds.

Does sudafed also have anti-cholinergic properties?

Can you take singulair with the other things he already uses?

Understand what Sudafed is 1st. It's not an anti-histamine nor is it a leukotrine agonist.

It's a vaso-contrictor.

Many people who have allergies experience stuffy noses. There are two ways to treat stuffy noses: an intranasal steroid (extremely effective - and also opens nasal terbinates to avoid sinus infections) and pseudoephedrine (constricts veins in the nose).

Sudafed will not eliminate itchy, watery eyes, hives, post nasal drip, or inflammation in the lungs. These are the jobs of an anti-histamine or a leukotriene agonist.

But to answer your original question, no, sudafed does not have anti-cholinergic properties.
