Allergy to IV cipro

I am not sure if this is only with Vancomycin, but I recently had a reaction to it when taking it IV. I was told to slow the infusion rate and was fine with subsequent infusions. Other than that, usually doctors don't want to mess with medications that there is a possibility of allergy with, unless the allergy is mild ( a rash or itching), in which they may find the benefit of the medication to be worth the risk of allergy. I don't know much about desensitization, but it may be something to ask about.

Marisa, your reaction to Vanco is very common for that specific drug (it is called Red Man's, you can google it).

As for if you can lose an allergy, I'm not sure. However, they can run a blood test to confirm the allergy so you would know for sure if Cipro is a no-go.

I've had small reactions to different IV meds. My doctors have started having me take benedryl 30 minutes before my IVs that I've ever reacted to. It has helped a lot. They said that they give it to kids fairly regularly to avoid reactions. The only downfall is trying to stay awake. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Hope this helps!
