Altera/eFlow cleaning

Ok...so I just got Cayston in the mail today from the CF Pharmacy. A few years ago I used the eflow when I was in the Aztreonam study, so the device itself is not new to me, but at the time I was not sterilizing my neb sets between each use (shame on me) so I feel like I am learning how to properly clean this particular handset for the first time. They actually sent it with a complimentary electric baby bottle sterilizer. The instructions for cleaning the handset seem pretty straight forward...to summarize:

1. Rinse with "clear" dish soap and warm water, making sure to hold the metal aerosol head under running water for several seconds to prevent clogging.

2. Next disinfect using the electric baby bottle sterilizer. They are very clear that you are to use an electric baby bottle sterilizer and NOT a microwave sterilizer.

3. Then just let dry on clean paper towel.

I am a little confused because a lot of past posts I have read talk about storing the aerosol head in alcohol, using ultrasonic jewelry cleaners, etc. None of this is mentioned in the instructions sent by the CF Pharmacy. Any input?

My son Adam is still on the study they had us clean it the same way.

The only thing we did is put all the parts is the soapy water scrub with a toothbrush (except the metal head). Rinse and put in the sterilizer as well we just pull it out and let it airdry as well.

I also wondered about the alcohol from other posts.

1) I soak mine in Ajacks soap (this is what the study nurse instructed me to do. They get the instructions from Gilead Sciences Inc.) and swish it around. I swish the metal piece around first, then the rest of the nebulizer cup. Then I rinse the metal piece first in hot water, then the rest of the pieces in hot water and let air dry. I was told to not mix the metal piece together with the plastic while rinsing, same with disinfecting. This is probably just for 'clogging' reasons, so the junk from the nebulizer cup itself doesn't get on the metal piece.

2) Then once a week I soak it in Control III Disinfectant Germicide once a week for 10 minutes.

Everyone has different ways of cleaning and sterilizing so I don't think there is one right way.

I'm still on the Expanded Access Program, I finish up Cayston next week. That's the reason why I haven't used any of the sterile products the CF Pharmacy encloses in the order. I haven't gotten my Cayston through them yet.
