Amazing people

I have two stories from today I wanted to share:

First, my mother has a friend she plays bridge with and walks with in the evenings (when it isn't snowing). I've never met her. Her husband has been very ill for years with emphysema, and particularly bad lately. They were all prepared. He passed away in the middle of the night last night. My mom's friend called my mom at 7:30 this morning. Her kids were already at her house and they were making arrangements. She told my mother that the announcements will ask people to make a donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in lieu of flowers. She felt it was a good fit because he did have a lung disease. My mom and I are just overwhelmed by her thoughtful generosity, in her own moment of grief.

The other amazing person is a friend of mine I met online through a pregnancy/parenting site. I joined when I was pregnant with Alyssa. Last year, a half dozen of the women on the board joined or created thir own
Great Strides team for Alyssa. another dozen donated to my team. In itself this was so amazing to me. But this year one of the women told me she couldn't do the walk. Instead she crafted a letter to all her friends and family telling them how Alyssa has touched their lives and asking that they donate a few dollars in a "pay it forward moment" if she (my friend) had touched them in anyway. She gave them the link to our team donation page, and already we have a handful of donations.

There are a lot of amazing people out there, and I wanted to share about these amazing two!!! I'd love to hear you all share stories about other people who have touched your heart by their kindness and generosity!

There have been so many, and I reserve the right to post again <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0"> but what comes to my mind first is my husband's co-workers in his department. He began working there just two months before Katy was diagnosed. But for the two Christmases since then, instead of doing a gift exchange they all pool their money together and give it to us to help with medication co-pays and other out-of-pocket expenses.

Thanks for sharing about some of the amazing people in your life. This is a great topic.

My story involves an entire team of people.
Last year I was helping the local foundation office find a donor for the lunches for great strides. I had contacted a new restrauant and their first response was that they were not big enough to handle donating 1500 lunches for the wallk but they would be opening a couple more stores within the next year and perhaps next year they could help. Nathan then got sick and had to go in for a tune-up and we still had not secured a lunch donation or worked out a deal for the lunches. Alician called and asked if she could have my contact information for Jim N Nicks, the restrauant I was working with because we were now desparate and she was going to see if they could handle 500 instead of the 1500 and if they would be willing to go with a couple other restrauants and split the lunches up. I gave her my contact, one of the owners of Jim N Nicks, and she called them. She explained that she was calling instead of me because Nathan had CF and was in the hospital and then made her pitch. The owner's wife was so touched about Nathan that she stopped her in the middle of her pitch to tell her that they would go ahead and do the whole event for us! They had such a good time at our Great Strides that they are doing the lunches again this year, did a fund-raiser lunch with the opening of another store in the Denver area, and got other Jim N Nicks in the south to join with helping their local CF Foundations! Wow! I never knew that one phone call to a new restrauant in the area would lead to such wonderful things from them!
They fell in love with the kids at the walk and are inspired to make the CFF there cause to help with as a local business and corporation.

There are so many wonderful people out there who have touched my life in various ways. The most profound act of generosity I have ever experienced personally was when I was finally ready to come home after being in the hospital for two months, fully vented and trached as well and needing a wheel chair ramp to boot. Funds were incredibly low and I had just separated from my husband as well. My community rallied, set up fund raisers through my church and subsequently raised the funds for the materials needed to build the new ramp. NOt only that, many carpenters from my town and beyond donated their time to build it when the time came. I was so touched by this, I didn't think that I would stop crying those tears of joy and gratitude!

They have done much for others as well such as raising funds to help a woman who was newly quadrapalegic come home as well as making modifications to her home to make it handicap friendly, building a wheelchair ramp for an injured soldier returning home from Iraq, fundraising to help a member of the community with overwhelming medical bills, etc.

I really am proud to be living where I am, to be part of such a caring town. Thanks for starting this thread, it is a good topic. Hugs, Jenn
