I have been prescribed Amikacin via nebulizer and am very afriad to use. I am so fearful of permanent damage to my hearing or balance or other side effects. I was very sensitive to Gentamycin and suffered permanent inner ear balance loss which I still live with today 15 years later. The Vancomycin have caused tinnitus and the roaring in my ears is becoming very difficult to cope with. So afriad to use this to treat the mycobacterium that is not responding to other meds. Please give me your thoughts and experience.

Hi! Well since you are doing Amikacin via nebulizer you have a better chance of less side effects since its not systematic like the IV form or Injection. I am sensitive to Gentamycin too, I got a really bad rash and balance and hearing was screwed up for months. I also got some kind of neurotoxicity in left hand from it,which I get tangling or numbness on a blue moon and I know it was from that stuff 8 years ago!

I was on Streptomycin injection for my mycrobacteria MAC, so depending on the strain what are your sensitivities? I warn you though, streptomycin was bad, I got face numbness after injection and on my last dose some kind of weird paralysis, but nothing in my hearing that I noticed but I was sent for hearing tests.

I appreciate your comments. I was told the the Amakacin neb should cause less problems that the IV but Ricky, I had gentamycin back in 1997 or so and suffered irreversible inner ear damage that left me permanenty without an inner ear balance. So you can appreciate my fear of Amikacin. I was first on gent as a nasal irrigation which started causing balance problems but the doctors told me that was not the cause since it was such a small amount in the sinuses. The with just this I started losing my balance and falling into walls and people if I turned my head. Now after 17 years I still have no balance. When I started the IV's that completed the damage. So I am afraid and have not started the Amakacin yet. I have mycobacerium Avium which is slow growing but it is still doing damage. I have had it for many years and was treated for 2 1/2 years before being told to stop treatment last August since it was not helping. But this only caused it to come back with a vengence with even worse symptoms. Before I was pretty unsymptomatic other than declining lung function. Now I have fevers and sweats and my stamina has been reduced to near nothing. I too have suffered neuropathy (tingling, numbness and burning in my feet and some in my legs from some antibiotic probably. The Azithromycin is causing very severe stomach pain but I take Dexalant and tums for this. Was told to watch Tums intake though. So much more. I just don't want to damage my hearing more since I have roaring tinnitus especially after the last rounds of Vancomycin IV's My infectious disease doctor said on Friday that he is treating a patient with severe hearing loss at this time from Amikacin. I don't want this to happen to me as I have enough side effects already. Also the rash, blisters on my hands is just starting to heal on my hands after my hospitalization last April. Lots more but this's enough.
Best of luck to all out there and prayers to each of you.
