Hey, we are on the inside for IV abx, and he is on Timentin which we have used before, but the added Amikin (Amikacin) which I was not familiar with.

Looking online it has some nasty side-effects so just curious if any of you have used and what you thought of it.

Thanks,

dh was on amikacin for 3 weeks when he was in the hospital earlier this year. luckily he didn't suffer any nasty side effects and it was exactly what he needed to get rid of the bug he had.

sorry i don't have more information than that, but i do know he tolerated it quite well.

We were on 2 weeks of Amikin and Fortam at home last year for PA (found by BAL). No side effects at all. Got completely rid of PA (proven by second BAL after treatment).

I was only on Amikacin once . It seemed like a good drug but i noticed some decreased hearing in my one ear, towards the end of the coarse of it. My hearing came back within a week or so. I noticed ever since then i tend to have problems with iv Tobramycin causing slight hearing loss in that same ear ( never had that before with it). I guess the Amikacin opened up a small can of worms for me there.

My son is on amikacin for 12-18 months. I know it can cause hearing loss. I don't know if there's a bigger risk because of the amount of time my son's on it though. At first he used inhaled amikacin because it doesn't pose a very big risk of hearing loss. However, it made him throw up (just the taste/smell) and lose weight. Now he's on the IV form and seems to be doing well so far. My son has mycobacterium abssescus. What is your son being treated for?

I was on this for about 18 months. I am mostly deaf because of it. I don't think short-term use will do too much damage though. It can be toxic to both the ears and kidneys if taken long-term.

I have been on this one more than a few times in the past , I blame it for a bit of annoying hearing damage in my left ear (loud noises like the theater produce a scratching noise in it)

like other said it can be toxic if your peak lvls are too high so MAKE SURE THEY DO LVLS, i got the damage because the lvls were neglected because i was on it before and they just did the same dose. so be careful.

I, too, was on amikacin for a period of 18 months. Like everyone else who endured the same therapy, my hearing is basically shot. Constant ringing, etc. The treatment worked out pretty well, though.

Hi,

I am surprised with how many people have hearing damage. I do too. I was on Amikacin IV for 6 mos., and have low-tone hearing loss in my left ear. I hear high pitch very very well in my left ear, but I have a hard time with low tones [as in conversations]. The treatment worked though, my cultures have been negative for 3 months. As for my hearing, they say there is a possibility that it will come back, but I have constant ringing in that ear...its quite annoying.

Just have the doc's check your hearing frequently. They will stop treatment if they see damage. At least my doctors did.

Best Of Luck!

I'm just going to echo everyone else... Amikacin works for me both inhaled and IV. The first round of it was 8 weeks and I had some ringing in my ears, but it stopped when the IVs stopped and my hearing test came back normal. Just make sure they are checking the drug levels in his blood. I have pretty bad nausea issues, but this isn't one of the drugs that sets it off so I'm assuming its milder than a lot of the stuff out there. Even timentin makes me puke.
