Carey, congrats on your new little one. DS had similar issues with meconium illeus and surgery and didn't have to have an ileostomy. We pretty much just waited for them to determine everything was working and were thrilled when we started having to change messy diapers, then moved on to gradual feedings.

Hopefully she too won't have any problems either. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Sorry for the delay. What a week it has been!
So Maggie had surgery for complicated meconium ileus on Tuesday and we finally got the okay yesterday (Friday) to start pedialyte feedings. She has been on breast milk almost a full day now. She has been bottling good but started out shakey enough that she now has a NG tube incase she has any trouble.
The NICU staff is starting out small with feedings so she is not to start enzymes until Monday which she will be between 20-25mls per feedings by then.
I just got off the phone with the nurse and she said Maggie was a little crabby tonight, which so far is unusual for her. I wonder if as the breast milk is working its way through her gut it is causing her some discomfort. Maggie has not had a 'breast milk' poop yet. I am anxious to see what her poop looks like without enzymes.
The NICU staff is also checking residual before every feeding and it has been a milky green. Not sure exactly what that means though. Is her gut just have some slow motility due to the recient surgery? Is there some kind of blockage forming and that is causing the crabby/crankiness? I know I am over thinking this, that has always been my problem. Food is still so new to her system, I know that but it is still hard to have patience.
Well, one day at a time, I just need to remember that. And sorry if this post rambles slightly. Like I said it has been quite a week.

DS did have some adjustments when he started eating and the surgeon did warn that it might take a little time. There were motility issues, getting used to enzymes, reflux -- add to that how NERVOUS we were and anxious to get home -- feedings were a bit stressful.

Just remember, she's where she needs to be while they get things figured out. We were so anxious to go home and it was too soon. We were home one night and ended up going right back in for two more weeks because of an infection he brought home from the NICU. We spent our time in the NICU learning from the RTs how to do CPT, handle meds, etc. Keeping you in my thoughts!
