I've been diagnosed as anaemic. I have felt tired for a long time but put it donw to pressures of daily work etc. I am on iron tablets now (since Thursday) but not really feeling any better. They also make me constipated and i have enough problems in that area already !!

Can anyone recommend any iron rich foods that i could take longterm to stop this problem reoccuring. I suffer from heavy periods so could do to up the iron in my diet.

have you ever considered doing an iron drip? Ive done one in the hospital, and am scheduled to go in next monday. i hate taking another pill and yes they are hard on the stomach either making you sick and crampy or constipation.

We have to take a lot of iron to absorb it, since we have absorbtion issues. Not sure how easily it would be to ask (or if you already know about it, and dont want one) but the drip can take like 6 hours but it lasts like 3-6 months (they check your blood after 3 typically I think). You have to do it at a clinic b/c there are risks, sometimes, though I never had a problem with my first dose.

In case you didnt know anyways.

But as far as food, meats and especially seafoods (I believe) have the best iron to absorb and other dark vegetables like broccoli and spinich have another type of iron, but isnt absorbed as easily. I have a list from a nutrionist but I dont have it with me or I would type it all out for you, but a quick google should also give you more ideas.

when my niece was 12 months old she tested anaemic after some routine blood drawing...they told my sister to load her up on apricots and she would be fine....so maybe apricots would help...i mix them in a smoothy almost daily to prevent that just in case. Good Luck!
God Bless,
Mallory

I have a low iron count too. Here is a list my doc gave me:

red meat
dried fruits (raisins, prunes)
oysters/clamms/scallops
dark green leafy veggies (spinach, collard greens, broccoli)
Beans (black eyed peas, kidney and pinto beans)
Liver
Almonds
Asparagus

Also vitamin c will help your body absorb iron.

I've been through the same problem. I can't tolerate iron at all; it makes me constipated, which makes me nauseous -- all bad things.

To the point about your period, if you're able to take low dose birth control, that might help as it should make your periods shorter and lighter. I am on the nuvaring in part to treat my anemia.

I was anemic for a couple of years, but a diet high in red meat has fixed that. At first, I tried to eat a little bit almost every day; now 2-3 times a week probably. I also switched from an over the counter vitamin to AquaDEK vitamin, which doesn't contain iron, but I think has improved my absorption, so you might consider changing vitamins.

Hope some of this helps!

Oh I've been there, it took me ages to find an iron supplement that worked for me (i was having upset stomach & constipation) but Ferrograd C works well for me. (not sure if it has a different name or is available in the states)
