I heard that folks should never try iron, as it makes you feel RUN DOWN. I was diagnosed as anemic when I was 16. Cute story actually... The dr walked in and without saying that I was anemic, told my mom "Well, you need to get her on prenatal vitamins." My mom thought I was pregnant! ha!

At any rate, the prenatal vitamins have done very well for me, and I tried taking the plain iron before, and goodness, I will NEVER do that again!

If I were you, I'd try the Prenatal vitamins before taking the iron pills, but that's just my opinion. Good luck!

I too have pretty bad anemia and am on iron replacement everyday. My hemaglobin was actually in the 7's when I was hospitalized last year. I had to take 3 iron pills a day for a full month and then gradually drop them to once a day. Even now, my Hgb runs between 8 and 10. I agree with others, iron is really tough on my belly too and constipation is a battle whenever I am on high doses.
Also...I have found that whenever I am on intense IV antibiotic therapy, my counts drop too...docs monitor me pretty close while in.

Actallly, I have had IV iron at home. I am very anemic and a on an IV iron regiment every 5 months. It's called FERLICIT and it comes in a suringe. You can mix it with Saline (if it bothers your viens, I have a port, so I dont feel it) or you can push the suringe so that it goes in slowly in about 15 minutes. It usually brings up my count and last for about 4-5 months. If I'm on on anti-biotics too, they just add it to that regiment.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Oh yeah, I was on the prenatal vit....they were the worse! You think we have BIG stomachs now...those suckers MAKE you look like your pregnant! And boost up the miralox if your on them b/c constipation and bloating is the worst!!

They let you take ferrlecit at home?! They always told me that was never an option because "it has to be mixed in the pharmacy and then infused right away" blah blah. Thanks so much for letting me know, I'll look into that.
