Yes 3 hours of sleep is the ideal but I notice my temps don't fluctuate much even if I don't get 3 hours before I temp. IMO you really need to get a BBT thermometer. A regular fever thermometer is probably going to be pointless as it won't give you accurate info for charting.
I am a CFer who got pregnant using FAM. I have cycles that are about 32 days long or so. Using FAM I realized that I ovulate around day 21 and have a 10-11 day luteal phase. If I hadn't been charting we would have been trying way too early to get pregnant. When trying to get pregnant I also use cheap OPKs that I get from the internet as an additional tool. Charting won't tell you when you are going to ovulate but it will confirm ovulation and give you an identifiable pattern after a few cycles. It will also let you know when to expect your period and when to test for pregnancy. Getting a positive reading on an OPK does not guarantee ovulation. You could actually have an LH surge without ovulating. Charting will let you confirm that you did in fact ovulate. When I'm not trying to get pregnant I still chart my cycles to know when we need to play it safe. Oh I also learned that I don't produce good fertile cervical fluid so this month we are using a product called pre-seed. Its a sperm friendly lubricant that actually aids fertility. FAM has been great for me. I've been charting since the beginning of 2004. It took 4 cycles to get pregnant with my son. My period resumed when he was 14 months old and I've been charting since the beginning of this year to get to know my cycles again in preparation of getting pregnant.
Have you read the book "taking charge of your fertility"? Its a must read for any woman trying to get pregnant IMO. fertilityfriend.com is a great free site for keeping your charts. If you pay the fee then it helps to interpret your charts too.
