As a mother to a CF positive infant, I can't help but to notice that children still succumb to this illness. This is despite the new treatments which have increased the average lifespan. Perhaps the answer is obvious to others, but what causes their "early" passing?

Can I just say without offending people that I think a lot of it has to do with parenting... There are parents that have a brain and know when something is wrong. They know what to do even when the doctors are still scratching their heads. I know we need doctors, I know that without a doubt. But you have to admit that sometimes there are times when we know better then them. That being said, I think that some children succomb earlier due to parents not knowing when something is wrong or not having the brains or abilty to do what is necessary to keep their children as healthy as possible (CF or not). I know that this is not true in all cases, of course some CF cases are far too advanced for any amount of intervention, but for the most part, I think that we as parents have the ability to get our children through far more then we give ourselves credit for!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

There are lots of different severities of CF. Some people have more digestive problems, others more lung problems. Some infants succumb to CF while other people are diagnosed in their 40's. There is a lot to do with parenting, for sure. However, I don't think it all depends on that one factor. I do believe in aggressive health care. I didn't until recently (I'm very passive by nature), but being a tough advocate for your child is the best thing you can do. Be involved, informed, and supportive, even if it makes you seem pushy and irritating. That way, your child will grow up to be her own advocate, as well. I wish you the best!

No, you can not say that without insulting people. This forum is filled with smart, devoted parents whose children have a serious disease. Bacteria don't care if you "have a brain".
