WE got his port put in on Wednesday afternoon it took 2hrs, I was pacing the ward wiating to here anything after 90mins. He also had another canula put in his foot so they decided to use that for as long as it would last to give the port a chance to settle down.
Of course the canula fell out the very next day (as it would on a 1yo's foot - can't keep them still) so they accessed the port but used a 1inch needle instead of a 3/4 inch needle and they had to pack the area so it wouldn't stick in so much. Of course when i got there after work (had to go to work for the first time ever that my kds have been in hospital - i was a mess!)I took him to the play area and after some time he fell over and of course the line occulded. They could not save it so they had to reaccess him. Went into the treament room while they were doing it and broke out in a cold sweat and almost fainted. I didn't relise their would be so much scarring it looked terrible.
When he was in his cot that night he rolled around heaps and heaps and untwisted the line and started crying heaps I picked his and reliased he was wet when the nurse came in I went into the light and saw my nightshirt covered in blood - not too much but becuase it was mixed with saline it spread heaps. They tried to flush it but the blood in the line had clotted and they couldn't shift it even with hepron so of course he then had to be accessed yet again, but they were worried that the port had actually clotted as well. And then they would have to give him medicene that stroke victims have (i assume Warfron, my DH was given this after he had a pulomary embolisim). The port was very stiff but they managed to get it in.
So I not impressed so far by the port. i stayed away from work the next day to talk to the doctors because I was very upset. It was agreed that in between IV's they would put a hepron lock in the port and we also got the occupational therapists to make him a little body vest that go over him so and keep the little line flush to his body so that he cant play with it.
Since then is been going fine and fingers crossed it continues to.
