Antacid

Just wondering how many of you are taking antacids. I know it is common in CF and my 4 yr old is taking Prevacid.....30mg once per day. We tried Zantac before but it was not strong enough. We tried to reduce the Prevacid dosage to 15mg a while ago, but her reflux returned, and now want to try it again. I have this idea in my mind that she will come off of it. Is this being unrealistic or do many patients take it into their adult years?
Thanks for your input.

I take Somac, it's acually beneficial to take antacid's. They can help with the digestion of any enzymes you or your 4yr old might be taking.

I take 1 Losec every night and it usually works well for me, but some foods don't agree with me. If I eat pizza and dring pop with it I usually have to start popping Tums.

I take prilosec 40 mg. It helps tremendously. Before I started taking it I was needing Tums after everything I ate...even water! Now, I only have reflux very rarely.

Funny you should ask... I just got back from a gastro. appt. right now to discuss this very thing.

My gastro. doc told me that it is safe to take antacids for an extended period. There have been studies showing that after 10-15 years in VERY high doses, they can lead to a certain form of RARE cancer, but these studies have ONLY been found in mice (of course) and not humans since we don't take such high doses. Therefore, he said the benefits outweigh any (if there are any) risks. He said if you don't take them and your acid backs up into your esophagus it can lead (more likely than taking too much antacid) to cancer as well, so it is best to keep it at bay.

I have heard many CFers have troubles with reflux due to our messed up digestive systems, so it is completely normal to be on antacids indeffinately. I've also heard that for CFers not to be on antacids, it can be dangerous and even lead to worsening of the lungs if not treated due to ruining our esophogus and making it harder to breathe.

I've been on Prilosec for about 7 months and today got put on Aciphex for a change to see if it works better. I get heartburn with water too! I will stay on antacids as long as the give me relief. No worries.

They originally put her on zantac because her weight gain was not what they had wanted. Sometimes the acid in the system will counter act the enzymes. Later on she started having nausea and some vomitting in the mornings (reflux) so we put her up to the Prevacid. We are going to try and reduce the dose and see how it goes.

I had severe reflux as a baby/toddler and was on Reglan (spelling?), which worked really well, according to my mom (as in I didn't throw up all over her at every feeding anymore <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">). For awhile I wasn't on any antacids, but from about 3rd grade on, I've been on some sort of antacid. It's no big deal.
