antibiotics allergies

Hello,

<br />I am pretty much allergic to every oral antibiotic used to treat my bugs. I am actually set up to go a drug allergist next month to see how severe the allergies actually are and which ones specifically I'm allergic to. I may go through desensitization if needed because there's no orals really left for me to use. And of course, I prefer to use orals over IVs any day.

<br />So, it's not uncommon for us to be allergic to the meds, since we're on them so often. The choices are basically to go through desensitization or to use IV's in most cases.

Hi there! I'm allergic to sulfa (bactrim) and augmentin as well. The sulfa reaction happened 5 days into my first course of it (hives, facial/finger swelling, ER visits) and then Augmentin reaction happened my 2nd time on it (I took it for 2 weeks - all that happened was my hands and feet itched really bad the first pill I took-then I was fine for 2 weeks). The first pill I took on my 2nd time on it - full blown anahlactyic reaction-which I now have an epi for.

So....luckily from what I have heard these 2 meds (Sulfa and penecillin) are the 2 meds that most people are allergic too. Luckily there are plenty other orals that I can take. I have heard of desentization as well-but have never had to do it-I think it works great in most cases.

Thank you guys so much for all the replies. We saw drug allergist last year re augmentin and I asked about desensitization and he told us that in does not work for delayed reactions (like 5 days after etc).

I will talk to her doctor on monday and will let you know what she said about all this. Knowing there are other oral meds out there is really comforting!

I have found a great doctor who will do the desensitization for me in his office (across from a hospital.) Most doctors want you to be in patient in ICU.

I live in NYC but travel to Philadelphia to go to this allergist because the hours spent in the car are worth it to me to avoid being admitted. I have no idea where you live but if you are within a few hours of the Philadelphia area let me know and I can PM you his contact info. He is excellent.

Haha I just saw in another thread that you live in Europe so scratch that...sorry. Hope you are able to figure things out! Just keep in mind that there are options and ways to work around drug allergies, it can just be a bit of an inconvenience.

The doctors have been using zithro and augmentin for oral meds. The IV drugs hit me pretty hard-core but work to kill the bugs that I cultural. I go to National Jewish so they are pretty on top of my allergies. I have seen an allergist in the past-- I am allergic to tons of stuff-- lotions, grass, shampoos, hair spray.

We haven't begun to fight my mycrobacteria so I am anxious to see what combo they will use for my next round of antibiotics.
