Antibiotics for Sinus Infections

Okay, I have a lovely sinus infection (made my teeth hurt today for the first time in a while- I'm sure pms isn't helping-grrrrrr...) and have been on Augmentin 850? for over 2 weeks, so I'm thinking it's a no go on the Augmentin .

In the past, I have taken Cipro, and it has done a pretty good job the last few times, but, I have taken it the last few times , and I don't want to "wear it out" for my lungs, too.

I've seen that there are other antibiotics I have never heard of that others have mentioned here and there on the forums, and was wondering if y'all would mind sharing what they are so I can ask my ENT about them when I go in (soon! ).

Thanks all!

Well it depends on what you think your sinuses are colonized with.

Do you think it's PA? Do you think it's H. Flu?

If it's PA, Augmentin won't touch that.

Avelox, Cipro and Vitamin L (Levoquin) are all in the same class and generally have equal efficacy (Levo tends to have lower efficacy against PA than the other2 though). They will treat PA.

Idiot ENT's give Zithromax (really poor sinus tissue penetration) - I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot poll.

Some give Bactrum but I wouldn't think that would be a good bet.

Make sure you are using an intranasal steroid for your sinuses. You can treat the bacteria all day long, but if your sinuses can't drain the infection is just going to hang on and on and on and on.

So while asking for another antibiotic, make sure you ask for some Nasacort AQ as well to help open up your nasal terbinates. And use it all the time, regarldess of how you feel, so you can keep your sinuses open and prevent infection.

Thanks Amy. I did forget to do my Nasonex or Astellin today, so that probably explains the headache (I remembered this after posting the question, of course). I also had a rare (no big deal) nosebleed a couple of nights ago (just in my nose ).

For some reason, the steriod nasal sprays give me headaches, nose bleeds and stuffiness- I think I have tried the Nasalcort AQ, but I'll see if they have some samples and give it a go again and make sure . I've read what you said about the alcohol, and I am pretty sure I have tried at least 1 or 2 that have AQ on the end...

Most of my sinus problems are allergy induced, and it hasn't helped that I thought earlier this week both DD and I were catching a cold- never did rear it's whole ugly head, though, thank goodness!

Now that I think about it, I guess it must be PA that gets flared up, as the Cipro has been working, but the Augmentin hasn't touched it...The last time I went to the Ent, (after a round of Cipro) and he said my sinuses were a "0" .

Maybe I'll just do the "couple of snorts and exhale through my nose" thing next week when I start a round of Tobi, and see if that helps... .

- Would still like the antibiotic suggestions, if anyone has them .
