Antibiotics Susceptible versus Resistant

I got the results of a recent sputum culture and am wondering if anyone knows the difference between being susceptible versus resistant to antibiotics.

My results show that I am resistant to Amikacin, Cefepime, Ciprofloxacin, Gentamicin, Levofloxacin and Tobramycin.

Susceptible to Aztreonam, Ceftazidime, Imipenem and Piperacillin/Tazobactam.

Is this inline with everyone else?

Susceptible is the same as sensitive......it means that you should respond to those meds.

Resistant means that at this time those meds wont do much for ya because your body/bacteria has build a resistant/immunity to them.

Actually Lizabeth, it's not you that are either "susceptible" or "resistant"....it's the "bugs" that are either one or the other and is a determination that will tell what med's will work and the ones that will be a waste of time. <b>;-)</b>

I'm currently sitting in my hospital room since Dec. 27 and am on IV Tobra, Zyvox and Ceftazidime. I have two different strains of PA and MRSA. Hope to go home in the next day or two....

You can also have multiple bugs at one time. I am on Tobra and meropenem. One bug is resistant to the tobra but sensitive to the mp. Attackign the bugs w/ multiple abx is more effective in eliminating or reducing the bacterial load.
