Antibiotics while pregnant?

Hello, I am 9 weeks pregnant and this is my first pregnancy. I was hoping that I would be really lucky and not get sick while I am pregnant, at least for the 1st trimester, but I must have caught something. I have had a little bit of a sore throat the last 2 days and yesterday some nasal congestion, and this morning I woke up feeling like total crud. This is usually an indication that I need some antibiotics before it hits my lungs really bad. I am going to try to get an doctor's appointment tomorrow, but I am not sure of the deal with antibiotics during pregnancy: if they are okay to take or not. Has anyone else taken antibiotics during pregnancy? Thanks!

Bottom line is, some are safe and some are not. The good thing is, there lots that are really safe!
I've been on abx with both pregnancies, and we're very fortunate now to have safe options. You know that keeping your lungs healthy is protecting your baby ultimately.
I never needed IVs while pregnant, but oral zithromax has helped keep little bugs at bay, and for times I've been really sick oral Ceftin has been great.
With my first pregnancy, I had the flu and needed a month of Ceftin, and a month of prednisone too. It worked out fine, with a healthy mom and healthy baby.
I definitely am very choosy about what I take while pregnant though. I'd talk with your docs about which options will work for your lungs, and ask lots of questions. Also discuss it with your obgyn or midwife too if that will make you feel better.

Hi Marisa,

It is definitely safe to take some antibiotics. I actually took tobramycin (inhaled w/eFlow) throughout my pregnancy and also did a round of Colistin during an exacerbation. Fortunately, everything turned out fine and there were no side effects on the baby. I believe both of those meds are safe when inhaled (because they do not go directly into the bloodstream). But the important thing is to remember that you have to remain healthy as well. So your CF doctor is going to do whatever they can to keep *you* healthy, while your OB/GYN is going to do everything to keep the *baby* healthy...so keep that in mind. So there needs to be a balance, and sometimes your two MD's will have to get on the phone with each other see what's best for you both. But don't worry about it too much, as most are safe inhaled. If you are going to need IV's, then those definitely have to be safe for pregnancy since those go directly into your bloodstream. I hope you feel better and good luck!

Kelsey your husband and you should set up an appt with your cf doctor specifically to discuss your plans to conceive and what changes to your treatment regimen he/she would like you to make. There might be things you need to stop but also things you might need to add nutritionally and perhaps you'll need to do a tune up, exercise more or other things that might be necessary. Good for you doing some planning! With some planning pregnancy and cf can be quite stress free.
