Anxiety meds that DO NOT make you sleepy?

So I am having sinus surgery again in a bit over a week. I am starting to get very anxious about going in. I have my wedding two months after the surgery and I feel like I can't get excited about the wedding until after the surgery. But I have SOOOOOO much to do for the wedding that HAS to be done before the surgery.

I am looking for some anxiety meds to take just up until the surgery that will NOT make me sleepy (although I also do NOT want to be up all night). I don't know if I will actually take them (I am kinda stubborn like that), but I would like some suggestions. I have a prescription for Klonapen (sp?) that I never took, but I hear that makes you sleepy. I took Lorazapem the day I had my PICC placed and that worked well and I don't remember feeling many side effects. But would it work the same way? If I only want to be on it short term, would it work better or worse? I mean I would probably only need something if I am feeling particularly anxious. I think that the Klonapem takes a while to get in your system (?) so it may not even make a difference. What else would work for 10 days?

All of the benzodiazepines will make you sleepy to some extent(klonopin, xanax, ativan, valium etc.). I guess my question would be: Are you needing something to sleep, or is this a daytime anxiety problem?

For sleep Ambien would be your best bet. It has a rapid onset and also only lasts about 6 hours.

You are right about the klonopin, peak concentration takes between 1 and 4 hours and it can last as much as 30 hours, which can cause daytime grogginess in some people. Ativan is a nice middle of the road benzo. It's peak concentration occurs at about 2 hours and it lasts about 12 hours.

Some people do well with non-benzodiazepines like Trazadone. Discuss it with your doctor. My hunch is that if you can get some good sleep that might help things quite a bit (assuming you are having trouble sleeping as well). Try to avoid things like wellbutrin and elavil. You might also try 3mg of melatonin (OTC) at bedtime, even if you are taking a sleep aid.

I hope this helps and good luck with your sinus surgery. I've had 4 and it's a breeze usually.

I take Buspar for anxiety and it doesn't make you sleepy. I have Ativan for major anxiety attacks but that will put you out. Havoc mentioned Trazadone but that's a sleepy pill. I love Buspar though and for me it started working the first day I took it.

Unfortunately, the most common way of treating anxiety is with a depressant. Therefore, while there may be some rare exceptions; talk to your Dr, you are probably going to have trouble finding something that only suppresses the anxiety w/o suppressing the rest of you.

Good luck!

I used to take Xanax years ago but I hated coming off of it because it is definately habit forming. My psych has prescribed Vistaril for me and I had very good results with it. It's non-habit forming, and it doesn't make me sleepy, it just takes the edge off. On the days I don't need it, I don't have any side effects or withdrawl symptoms. You may want to ask your doctor about it.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your taking the time to respond.

They are now talking of possibly bumping the surgery up to the 14th (instead of the 17th)...which pisses me off beyond belief, but that's another story for another time and it may not even happen.

I just don't want to be on something long term at this point in time. I feel like I can usually control my anxiety and lately at least, I have not been feeling any (aside from the surgery nerves).

@Havoc...Thank you for your encouragement. I have also had four sinus surgeries, but now that I am older, I get more anxious about them. I know in my heart that it will all work out, but it's hard to convince my brain. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">
