Any CF'ers with breast implants?

My wife is 26 yrs old with CF. I was wondering if any CF'ers on here has themselves or knows anyone with CF who has gotten breast implants? I think it would really boost my wife's confidence and make her feel better about herself, but I obviously have concerns about the weight it will put on her lungs and if there are any other threats it could pose. We have not asked her doctors about it, but I assume they would not be thrilled about the idea. I'd love to find out if there are any women out there with CF who have had this procedure done to answer some questions about it.

Through living with a CF patient, I understand how short life can be and would love to give my wife whatever she wants (within reason) while she is here with me. I have concerns on how it would affect her health, but I think boosting her self-esteem and making her feel great about herself could relieve some stress, which could possibly improve her health. I'd love get any and all input on this topic. Thanks!

My vote would be "no way" though because if I have trouble coughing for even a day due to pain in my chest area or even stomach, I develop an exacerbation. Trapped mucus = sick.
I am not sure how many weeks of pain and pain meds follow implant surgery, but I think the recovery is pretty long. Also, there a chance that her immune system will reject them, making her sick and requiring more surgery I don't know how high this chance is but would it be worth the risk? (Not worth it for me certainly since it is still up in the air whether my lung damage is autoimmune.) Would it affect her chances for a transplant...probably not, but she should check that too.
I know what it is like to be flat-chested--partially from genes and partially from low weight. It is quite hard to find a bathing suit that doesn't make you look like a 10-yr old, and often the padded ones gape in strange ways. Victoria's Secret has some really good ones though. Bras with the bottom padding will help her fill out clothes "properly" as well.
Finally, self acceptance on her part and your honest belief in the beauty of her small chest is the best gift she and you can give her. Sometimes people fixate on one thing about themselves to avoid looking at other stuff in their lives. Talking with a therapist about how she feels in general may improve her stress and self esteem.

I would NEVER advocate for another Cfer to get implants. Besides the fact that you have to go under anethesia for them (dangerous for a Cfer) and that they sit on the chest adding weight and that they require upkeep.....yeah, and also they are expensive. Why even a healthy straight woman would go through that process is beyond me. If your wife were my friend I would def tell her that it is a terrible idea. We all have things we would change if we could. I choose to focus on the things that will make me soul happy and that has nothing to do with my outer body.

I would agree with Melissa, try doing a search of this site. I seem to remember there was another thread a long time ago about breast implants, and a couple of women with CF had them.

I understand that this is coming out of a place of caring for your wife and believe me I understand self-esteem and body image issues. That being said, I would also have to vote "NO" on breast implants. One factor being anesthesia (as previously mentioned). I'm not sure what her current lung function is, but it's never ideal for a CFer to be vented and under general anesthesia. Granted many of us come out of it just fine (myself included), but that is after taking the risk due to medical necessity, not for an elective procedure.

Another major factor already mentioned by Melissa is that with the surgery being in the chest area I would imagine it would be next to impossible to do CPT or any good form of airway clearance for quite some time after surgery. This could potentially have a negative impact on her lung health.

The other thing I want to add is that I myself have large natural breasts and I personally feel they are potentially a detriment to my health. I feel as though they get in the way of the vest/CPT getting to all the lobes of my lungs effectively. Also they add a ton of extra weight to my front and only further exacerbate the posture/slouching that so many of CFers have from excessive coughing. I have considered breast reduction but for the reasons I mentioned want to steer clear of a major elective surgery.

Ultimately it is a very personal decision that needs to be between your wife, her doctor, and yourself. I, for one, would not judge whatever you decide. I just wanted to let you know my personal opinion.

I have debated them myself. There is a thread about it.

I bought the Victoria's Secret Incredible Bra and it is AMAZING!! It really gives you two full cups sizes!! It may be a nice gift while you debate the implants!
