Any other CF'ers deal with so much mucus

Teri, I also keep a small container of garbage by my bed, although I very rarely require it. Basically, the only times now that I cough up mucus is when I do my treatments, and occasionally when I am working. But I went through a very rough patch when I was in my mid 20s where, I lived in a room with paneling on the walls. The panels were fashioned out of formaldehyde, which is embalming fluid. I constantly coughed up mucus, was on antibiotics every other month or so, and hospitalized once a year. I actually thought my CF was progressing so much that it was near the end. So many nights of insomnia, and staring at myself in the mirror so sickly, coughing. I was choking on my mucus, it felt as if a python were squeezing my throat. I finally had enough and rectified that by tearing all the paneling down and finding out there's warning stickers on the back of them that say that they *may* cause harm to people with upper respiratory problems. I remodeled my entire room and I am perfectly fine now.

The moral of that little story is even though things may seem real bad, most likely if you stop and analyze your situation, there is an answer. Good luck to you Teri.

thanks Everyone for your replies. I do my vest 2 times a day with albutorol and pulmozyme. I have talked to my doc and he is now putting me HTS and zithromax mon wed fri. It makes me so mad that it gets like this because i was on zyvox for 4 weeks and a weeek later im back to where i started. I dont do any kind of exercise except chase after my 1 yr old. that alone makes me so tired. How do you guys RUN?? everytime i run my head pounds so hard that i feel like im going to black out, i tell my doctor that, but he doesnt have an answer because my oxygen levels are good. Last night was really bad i had to resort to cough medicine with codeine so that i could actually sleep. Thank God its the weekend so my husband let me sleep in, and he watched our daughter.

I actually started my "running" (which is more of a jog) out really slow. I HATE exercise and I was never a motivated person.

About 3 months ago I started a program called "from couch patato to 5 k" You start really slow...at first I was exhausted, worn-out with headaches at coughing spells....but after I would say the third time I was starting to feel really good. Now if I miss a day...I notcie a drastic difference in my energy level and in my chest tightness. I feel that 30-45 min on the treadmill a day or every other day really has helped me more than I could have ever imagined. And to be quite honest....I actually don't mind it now!

It's terribly difficult for me to run now, as last year I fell at my job while carrying a car battery. There was a pallet of something or another in the way and my leg got caught in it and I fell viciously on my right side. To this day I have significant trouble walking, I have constant pain shooting through my right leg, and running is practically a no-no. I went to the workman's comp doctor twice and this past time he said I was fine and basically that all my pain was in my head, and sent me on my way. I'm getting a second opinion by a real doctor, not a company-paid one.

This walking thing really puts me on edge, as I am genetically pre-disposed to get ataxia, as my mother is in a wheelchair, and her trouble walking began in her late 20s.

This is interesting because I too can't run because of pain in my right knee. I might get half a mile in and then have to stop. I'll limp for 2 days afterward. I did not have any trauma to the knee that I can remember. I saw an orthopedist and he said to strengthen my quads (I used to be a gymnast and my quads are very strong), nevertheless I did get into the gym on a bike machine with no improvement. So, now I just stick to biking for exercise. I have very little sputum production.

Yea I guess my leg muscles were always pretty weak but that was the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak, was riding a "lazy man's" exercise bike. A recumbent. Having me sit lower than my knees made my knees do a lot of the work. Needless to say I got Patellafemoral Syndrome shortly after. Right when I was beginning to heal, I took a dive at my job and it just exasperated all my current problems.
But yea I do about 15 minutes a night of leg stretches. I've done them for a good 6 months- I should be able to do this:

Well, maybe not quite that, but you get the gist of it. I can run slightly, but certainly not anywhere near like I could before. And sorry Teri for hijacking your thread.
