Anybody else out there suffering from hearing loss from Tobramyacin?

We were just told the other day that Faith lost her high frequency hearing. Basically 1500 hz and above. Well that doesn't mean much to me. We just keep observing what she can't hear. So far we've notice the m/w and stove beeper, screaming on the TV, sometimes the phone, and last night the upper keys on the piano all sound the same. Of course, they want her to consider hearing aids.

I'm so frustrated right now because it was the Tobramyacin that was the culprit. Not to mention the fact that it also gave her kidey's level a huge jump that put her in the hospital for a week. I just feel like her body is slowly deteriorating and I'm about to lose it.

Then I found out that the hearing aids are not covered my insurance! Oh yea!!

Anybody else have this because of the drug?

I'm sorry your daughter is going through so much. I can't believe insurance won't cover a hearing aid! I don't know how old she is, but how can she learn properly in school if she can't hear everything? That's ridiculous.

Try posting this in the adults section, I know I've seen a few people talk about their hearing loss from tobramycin there.

I have a friend that has lost 80% hearing in 1 ear and 20% in the other from Tobramyacin and I know of another CF patient around that has lost pretty much all of her hearing. I was told that hearing aids don't help though.

Lost of hearing is a possible side effect of Tobrimycin. Usually, bloods are done to test the levels so that they can be adjusted and avoid this complication.

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter, I would be devastated if this happened to any of my kids.

I lost a part of my hearing on the left side due to tobramycin-IV some years ago and I do also have tinnitus in that ear since then.

I've been wondering the same thing. My daughter is 18 months and not talking at all, just babbling a ton. At 6 months she was on IV tobi to eradicate psuedomonas (it worked!) and then a month at home of TOBI. Now we are wondering if the Tobi did something to her hearing. We go in next week for a hearing screening to see if that is the culprit of Kate not speaking. On the flip side, my family keeps telling me not all 18 months year olds talk, so I may be stressing over nothing. I sure hope so!
