Anybody else out there suffering from hearing loss from Tobramyacin?

I've been wondering the same thing. My daughter is 18 months and not talking at all, just babbling a ton. At 6 months she was on IV tobi to eradicate psuedomonas (it worked!) and then a month at home of TOBI. Now we are wondering if the Tobi did something to her hearing. We go in next week for a hearing screening to see if that is the culprit of Kate not speaking. On the flip side, my family keeps telling me not all 18 months year olds talk, so I may be stressing over nothing. I sure hope so!

because of Jess's CF she is eligible for Medical Benefits thru the state of PA. this insurance is secondary meaning that it only covers what our primary insurance does not cover, including hearing aids.
another friend has a son with significant hearing loss and I know this insurance covers hearing aids.
it might be worth looking into?

I lost some hearing to medications i was on as baby, but it wasn't to TOBI. I have high frequency loss as well and i DO wear hearing aids and they help IMMENSLEY! I can hear the beeps of the coffee maker and all those sounds, and w/o the hearing aids i don't.

For the longest time docs said h/a wouldn't help which is BULL b/c they do! And i think it's unfortunate insurance won't cover them! I hope things get sorted out for you!

Wow, that was some wonderful information.

Faith has been on inhaled TOBI in the past, but has been on Colistin since last summer when she contracted this mycobacteria. She was on home IV Tobramyacin for the last 2-3 months. We think this is the culprit. This was also the one that gave her high kidney levels over spring break. They did tobi levels, but somehow something happened.

Breezy, I would love to talk about your hearing aids. We just found out about Faith's CF a year ago and half ago. So not only is this new, but now this. It so much. We talked about taking sign language classes, because she's already getting frustrated by not being able to hear. How and where did you start looking for hearing aids? Did your insurance pay for them?

Jessica's mom, tell me more about ehis Mecial Benefits. Don't know if we have something like that in Virginia or not, but it might be worth checking out.

Thanks guys for helping me through this. I'm taking Amber's advice too and going to the adults section and ask there.

Faith has talked (through e-mail) to her first CF friend. I keep telling her how much this website has helped me. If anybody knows a Hanna who is 11 or 12, encourage her to keep writing. Faith really needs someone to talk to her own age about what is going on with her.
