Ry lost some hearing in his left ear to Tobra. After that, he refused to let them put him on it, he didn't want to lose his hearing.

Hearing damage caused by ototoxic drugs affects the hair cells in the inner ear. The damage is permanent and can make speech sound distorted. Hearing aids don't always help because although they amplify, they don't fix the distortion. But there are lots of strategies that can help. You should have your daughter see an audiologist and a speech-language pathologist. You can get lots of info on hearing loss in www.asha.org

With things like the telephone, speech, and even the microwave timer being in the hearing range of about 900 Hz to 3,000 Hz, is it possible to have a hearing aid that actually "filters" the noise to adjust it to his hearing range?
Also, what kind of percentage of hearing loss is there in the 1,500 Hz range? Perhaps if things like the telephone or even the microwave could be changed to a lower frequency, it may be distinguishable?

Hi Carol, Sorry that Faith has had hearing loss due to tobramycin... 3 years ago i was in for a routine tune-up... I was on Tobramycin and Sefapine..I.V.s... I was having diarrhea, vomiting and no other i.v. fluids were being givin as all of this was happening... the levels became toxic and i went into renal failure... i didnt know who i was or where was for three days.. they put a porta cath in my chest (other side from my cath. for i.v.s) for dialysis... i had and still have hearing issues. had to go for physical therapy for the imbalance issues, (part of the hearing) a 2 wk. stay turned into a 6 wk. nightmare...Now i tell everyone that i can to stay on top of everything going on in hosp... you have a right to ask questions.. unfortunately we dont always know until its to late... anyway when ever im on any antibiotics, i drink like crazy... Oh there is one good thing that came out of that whole expiernce... I became close to God/Jesus.... I hope and Pray all will be well with Faith...Sorry you all had to go through this..Take care and God Bless you guys... Joni 55 y/o f w c/f

I have only been on Tobra ivs once and right when I finished the med, my blood tests showed that the tobra was starting to miss up my kidneys, so it was a good thing I was finished with the drug and even if I wasnt the doc would of tooken me off of it. I feel that your daughters doc, might not be all that responsible especially for keeping your daughter on a drug that is affecting her kidneys and hearing I might ad, why would a doc do that. Why fix a problem while causing another problem. I take toby inhaled and sometimes I ll get a ringing in my ears but that is it, Im not sure if I have lost any hearing but Im sure I have some. I have never gotten my hearing tested since Ive been on Toby and I should. I know sometimes I can hear someone but cant understand what they are saying and sometimes I have to ask my husband to repeat himself too, but not all the time.

Yes, I have hearing loss due to Tobramycin. I have lost it only in one ear, and the degree of loss is moderate. Basically, that means that I cannot make out conversation without help. Using the phone has become difficult, and I now use the closed captioning when we watch TV. I've been evaluated for a hearing aid, and will have one soon.

The type of loss I have sustained is the kind that will benefit from a hearing aid. Other types of loss cannot be regained or helped.

Also, hearing aids are RARELY covered by insurance. (Mine won't cover it and I have really great Ins.)
