Anyone CF or CF/Transplant do Cosmetology?

I have been wanting to pursue cosmetology and I have been really healthy 3 years post transplant so I am planning on starting school in Feb 2011. Is there anyone that has done it or has a career in it?

Just like to know if it is a flexible job and if you notice any ill effects from the chemicals and stuff. I plan on wearing a mask when working with chemicals, color, perms and hair sprays. But just curious.

Thanks!

My only concern would be the chemicals. Hair dye can be pretty strong on the lungs <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

HI,

I did not do cosmotology but did go on after my lung tx (16 yrs ago) to become a licensed massage therapist and I did do spa body treatments, etc-and then became a spa manager. So I was around them to a degree-however if they irrated me, i could walk away.

I would just be "aware" and take precautions when you need to. Talk to your doctor about it, ask if there are certain chemicals that can be harmful, and then yes, protect yourself with a mask if you need to work with them. A lot has changed in this field and i am sure if you communicate with your instructors they may have some suggestions also.

I wish you all the best in your exciting new career!(and your LIFE)

Sincerely, Dottie

I did hair for 3 years. It got to be to much for me.....standing all day, your hands above your shoulders, and the chemicals. I loved doing hair it just got to be exhausting. If you plan on wearing a mask every time be prepared for ppl to ask all kinds of questions. Plus usually not good benefits. I to this day do not use hairspray cuz it makes me cough so much, the tiny particles get stuck in your lungs.
