Anyone dx'd with type 1 diabetes and then CF?

My 5 yr old son was dx'd with type 1 diabetes when he was 26 months old. At 6 months old he had some issues with "reactive airway disease" (like asthma type symptoms) when he got colds, etc. and on and off needed albuterol - but it wasn't terrible. He seems to have grown out of that happening to him.

About a year ago he started having bowel problems and was very constipated (the pedi took an xray). We eventually cleared that up but afterwards for the past year he's had pale colored feces almost every time and an oily look to the water wth it at times. He was tested for celiac (blood test about a year ago and that was negative).

In the past week he has started with the bad constipation again and on Saturday we started having a very odd thing going on. He is a fantastic eater but didn't want to eat - said his stomach hurt some. For what he did eat it seemed he didn't need insulin for it. Suddenly he seems to be either not digesting the carbs in the food or only some of them. I have gone over all of this in more detail with his pedi endo but she has no clue what is the problem.

I see his regular pedi tomorrow - any advice on what I should ask for? Any chance this could be CF? Wouldn't it be backwards to have the diabetes dx'd so long ago then the cf? I can't say he has lung issues - problems with infections and the sort. I will ask her to retest for celiac just in case.

The reduced insulin needs are sporadic and really he is all over the place and I'm going NUTS! I know you guys know the feeling - any help appreciated!

I can't remember who - but we do have someone on this board with Type I diabetes and CF

The test for CF is simple - just ask for an Ambry Amplified Full Panel genetic test. They'll take blood or swab from the cheek (can't remember which).

The test tests for all known CF mutations (1400 or 1500).

There is a prbability that it could be cf. I pretty much had the same issues goin on before i was diagnosed at age three. Also my parents took me to many, many doctors and none of them had a clue of what i had, thats probably the same process u and ure child r going threw right now. Just keep an open mind and be greatful for what ever the matters are. Give your son all the love and attention he needs. And i'le keep you and ure son in my thoughts and just try to ask many Q's u know behalf of ure son to the doctor. Good luck and no worries.

Can happen. I know of someone whose DD was dx'd at 12. She'd been dx'd at 4 with Type I diabetes but they didn't catch the CF til age 12. No lung involvement at that time, just very small for size and the diabetes...
