Colistin needs to be carefully ramped up to the most effective concentration that doesn't have wicked side effects.
My experience with it has been very good in terms of quickly taking care of infection. The side effects although tolerable, were weird.
-metalic taste in mouth (makes the burden of eating enough calories even tougher)
-tingling/numbness of lips and tongue (again, making eating not so fun)
-balance problems (I had a very hard time walking in a straight line and turning corners without swinging so wide I almost fell)
Usually the doctor will stop increasing the dosage concentration at the first onset of the tingly feeling in the lips. The tingly feeling will probably last throughout the course of treatment. My FEV1 improved quite dramatically when I was on the IV form of this medication. I was able to regain more than .5L
As with the other IV antibiotics we take, make sure you drink LOTS of water to keep your kidneys healthy. You might want to throw in some yogurt too to keep C.Diff and yeast infections at bay.
