Anyone have a undiagnosable fever?

My name is Sam, im 23 yr/old with mild to severe CF living in Auckland New Zealand. This is my first ever post, as i am fed up with not getting an answer from my doctor.

I have had a regular fever for around 3 months which is really affecting my day to day living. Always cold in the day, and then go to bed freezing but with a really high temp only to wake up in the middle of the night covered in sweet and really hot. My doctor has done the usual tests (blood cultures, urine sample, stool sample, spetum sample chest x ray CT scan etc).

Is there anyone else out there who has experienced such a regular and vicoous fever? Any answers would be great.

Sam.

Hi Sam, i live in Hamilton NZ, pleased to meet ya <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Just night sweats? I'm thinking one of two things - diabetes or bad stomach acid that is refluxing.

Even though they've taken bloods which will probably give them a 'snapshot' of your glucose levels at that time, i think you need to ask for a full glucose test, where they test you, then make you drink a sickly sweet drink, wait a couple of hours and test you again.

Also, if you are not currently on Losec, ask to be put on it, 20mg in the morning and 20mg at night. 40mg once a day didn't work well for me. While they are at it, ask them to test you for H Pylori - which can be the cause of sudden acid reflux problems and does all sorts of other damage as well.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi Sam, sorry to hear you're having such a rough time.

I had a similar experience about 10 years ago when I was a freshman in college. I started spiking really high fevers at night, and would wake up in pool of sweat. During the day, for the most part I would feel okay, but then at night my temp would rise, often to around 103 degrees. The only symptom I had during the day was fatigue, and some days I felt completely fine.

I went to my general doctor who ran a bunch of tests and couldn't explain what was causing the fevers. They told me it was probably just a virus and to ride it out. I waited probably another week or so and when I was still having the fevers went to my cf doc. They also ran a bunch of tests and still had no idea what was going on. They referred me to an infectious disease specialist. I got in to the specialist a few days later. By this point it had been going on for about three weeks. He took tons of blood and tested me for everything under the sun.

I got pretty nervous while waiting for the results from the specialist. By that point I was really felt like there was seriously something wrong with me that nobody could figure out and I would just keep getting sicker. Finally a couple long days later I finally had an answer. It turned out to be the Epstein Barr virus. As I understand it, it is the virus that causes mono. Mono was one of the first things I had been tested for weeks earlier, but I tested negative for mono, so they didn't pursue that. Since then I have heard of other people having Epstein barr and not mono.

They didn't treat me with anything, just rest and plenty of fluids. The fevers lasted probably a total of 6-7 weeks. I know you said your fevers have been going on for around three months, so I'm not sure how long the Epstein Barr virus can hang around.

I know that it's a super long shot, but when I read your post it reminded me of my experience so I thought it was worth mentioning.

Sorry this post got so long! I really hope you find some answers and start feeling better soon.

Hi Sam... fevers are what eventually got me diagnosed. They have determined that my ongoing fevers were a result of a localized staph infection in my left maxillary sinus accompanied by pseudonomas in my lungs.
