I'm about 27 weeks along, we know the baby has CF so we've been having monthly targeted ultrasounds. The baby is growing great, actually on the large side.

Yesterday they saw a bright spot. She said its not as bright as bone. That section of bowel is not dialated, and doesn't appear to be blocked. She said since the chloride channels don't work properly, sometimes you can see the salt collecting as a brighter spot. I had never heard of this before.

Obviously we're continuing with monthly ultrasounds, we'll see what develops. I was just wondering if anyone else has any experience with this, and how things turned out. I do know that even if there is a blockage, it can sometimes clear up on its own. Or enemas and such can be used after birth to try to avoid surgery. It is recommended now that I deliver at a hospital with a CF center and not my local hospital (I'll go to Hartford where my son's CF center is).

My worst fear with this whole thing is that my newborn baby will need surgery <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> so this has me a little worried.

Hi Amber.

DS had a "bright bowel" on his ultrasound at about 20 weeks gestation. They continued to do ultrasounds every month for awhile and then had the NICU team there when we delivered to make sure he was ok. Everything turned out fine and even though he did have a small blockage, but he passed it without surgery. I've been trying to find my old postings to help with your situation (because it sounds very much like mine) but I cannot seem to go that far back. . . am going to look into this, though.

Also, they also told us that it "wasn't as bright as bone". Not sure if a typical MI is as bright as bone, but it sounds like it is better than being that bright?

HTH and I hope to add some more to this topic if I can find my previous posts.

Good luck to you dear.

Hope that link works. It is from right after DS was born and he was in the NICU for a few days. We were definitely lucky that we did not have anything major - just 6 days in the NICU waiting for the x-rays to show that his belly was ok.

Here's the other one that I posted while pregnant and pretty much knew (because of the "bright spot") that DS had CF.
