Anyone heard of bacteria serratia mara scenes

I recently cultured a new bacteria called serratia mara scenes and wondered if anyone else had heard of it. I tried to research it online, but didn't find much helpful information. I've always just cultured psuedomonas mucoid and staph, but this new one has shown up the last two cultures. I started taking the oil of oregano drops a few months back and was excited to see that there hasn't been any staph on the last couple of cultures. But I was hoping for some information on this latest one, I think it is a fungus. My brother with CF had a lung transplant in October of last year. Recently he was told that he had a fungus in his culture, but he didn't find out what it was. I tried to question him about it, but he didn't seem to want to talk about it. Now I am curious if we have the same one. I was in the hospital with him alot and stayed down in a motel for a few weeks to be with him.

"Serratia marcescens"

I thought it sounded familiar. I don't culture it, but I've had it in my bathroom before (it's the red stuff that grows sometimes.) Does anyone know if it is the same red stuff you see on snow in the mountains?

edit Never mind, I found out the red stuff on snow is algae

Hi Michelle-
I remember that Sean Davis cultured this as well...were you inhaling the oil of oregano? or, were you just taking the drops?

One of my kids' cultured this once, although I'm not sure which one. The nurse casually said serratia and we thought she said CEPACIA and freaked out. I can't remember what they treated it with, but it hasn't shown up since.

Mandy,

I inhaled the oil of oregano only a handful of times, and continued with the drops. I think I felt really bad after the few times and stopped. But I did read here that you can feel really crappy at first. I inhaled some drops this morning with my albuterol and will continue with it. Sean must of posted that info before I joined on, so I will browse the archives. I read the info that others posted and I didn't know whether to be concerned about it such as cepacia or if it was just another bacteria. The info made it sound serious.

Thanks,
Michelle

Hey Michelle-
I didn't mean to worry you about serratia....I just wanted you to know that sean davis cultured it and never had before....he thought he picked it up after a long hospital stay, but wasn't sure. I was concerned becasue he acquired it after his oo usage. Look at his posts during the week of february 22- 2nd week in march. It should be in that area...I think the thread was called culture results.

I hope you are feeling well.

I did also culture it last year, but long before taking OO! My doc was not concerned at it at all but I took Ciprobay for 3 weeks and got rid of it.

Mandy,

Thanks, I looked the word up on this site and it took me to Sean's past postings about the serratia. I feel better, but I am wondering whether I should be taking cipro for it in addition to the Tobi I am doing now. I am going to call my clinic and see. It looked like from what I read that the different people that had cultured it in the past took cipro.

Thanks again,
Michelle

Hey,

I called and talked to my doctor today about possibly getting some cipro for the serratia marascenes and he informed me that I did not have it anymore, only the two strains of pseudomonas that I usually have. The last sputum culture I did was back in January I believe. I started taking the oil of oregano drops probably in late April. I also usually have staph along with the pseudo, but I did not have that again this time. I am just happy to not have the serratia. Maybe if I try to be a little bit more consistent with the oo drops, I could improve some more.
