I guess it would be weird having to tell your "roommate" all about CF. Well it is always an option if the 401k and stocks don't work out!

Where in Jersey maybe I'll be your roommate LOL!!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Definitely talk to someone at the insurance place though about the long term benefits. They will answer all your questions I would think without having to let your office in on your secret....Good luck!!!

You can ask ur HR person at ur job about their disability insurance or who do they get their disability insurance from. If they ask "why", just tell them "I just want to know", "I just want to look into it, I've heard it's something good to have.", something along those lines. They are just being nosey when asking why, they shouldnt be able to with hold information on a service/policy the company offers to all employees. Disability is just like Health Ins, you have the right to look into it. You do not have to give ANY info about ur CF. However, if you apply for disability, you will probably have to take a physical, answer a bunch of health questions, and maybe even submit medical records, therefor ur CF will probably come out in the open. My DH, w/o CF and very health, got private (he went to find and pays out of his own pocket for) disability. He had to get a physical by his doctor, meet with a company nurse for test, and answer a bunch of questions. He has never had any health issues. He took karate as a kid (under 12) and that was considered "dangerous activity" and it almost became a problem when approving him. Just out of curiousity when he went, I ask if someone with CF could get disability ins, I was straight out told no because Cystic Fibrosis is on their high risk (liability) list. Which means, you are 90% likelyhood of using that insurance vs a healthy person who will use it incase something happens, which is more of a 50/50% shot. Those companies give disability insurance to ppl who will pay but hopefully never use it, there for they wont pay out. Hopefully you get what I'm saying. I talked with Beth Sufian one time, she was matter-of-factly, but nice. Maybe she was having a bad day. Maybe you can talk try to talk to her again. I would tell her that you have CF, that way she knows why your asking. SSDI isnt bad. I know that CF is a disease on their list that if you meet certain criterias you can get approved pretty quickly. SSDI isnt the end of the world. Your SSDI is based on what you have paid in through the taxes taken out in the years that you have worked. Julie on this site knows a lot about disability (SSDI/SSI), you might want to msg her to see if she can help. I hope I was of some kind of help. Good luck!

All, there has to be a better way!!??? My SSDI is not enough to pay my monthly car payment and gas bill. I have been giving into Social Security since I have been 15 years old (working full time)!! That is 22 years of straight work!! They get us with this pre-existing condition crap...of course...because sick people just don't fit into their PROFIT MARGIN. What do you all do?? How can you survive?? I have been sooooo depressed thinking about this. I have put it off for years and just worked---hooked up to IV's and sick--coughing my brains out---I worked. I put my health on the back burner because I had to make money to survive and now I am finding if I can't do it anymore that I have nothing??

I assume you have a mortgage... contact the provider and ask how much it is to add disability insurance to it.
(I do not endorse this, only using it as an example:
