You may want to call ur Social worker at ur CF clinic and see if there is anything they can suggest for you. See if they know any assistance programs or whatever. They should be more in the know about this type of thing. I'm sure you are not the only CFer to come into this issue. The only other thing I can think of is to find something you can do from home. I am personally working in an online class and becoming certified in medical transcription so I can do that from home. Pre-Exisiting conditions will always be an issue when it comes to any type of insurance. Ins want to make money, not shell it out. You can be on SSDI and work up to a certain amount of money a month without loosing ur benefits. Unless u find an under the table job, like babysitting (but not so many kids it would be concidered a daycare), and ppl pay you without taking out taxes and preferrably in cash. I'm really not sure what else to tell you. Good luck.

I'm confused, are we talking about SSDI, or private disability?

If it's private disability, it's subject to the limitations that the company you work for, set with their disabiltiy insurer. There is really no way to know unless one of us was to go talk to them.

As far as SSDI, I'm trying to understand how after 22 years of work, you won't be getting a substantial amount for your monthly payment. My DH only worked 2 years (2 years on the books, worked off the books for 5) and he gets $821 a month, I know people who've worked 8 years and are getting about $1800...unless you've been working only part time for many years now.

Are you currently recieving SSDI? Are you working? I'm just trying to understand this so I can help

Hi Julie, thanks for your help. I really appreciate it. I work full time. I am talking about my companies private insurance. I have been working full time for 22 yrs. The SSDI per month would be like $2000. Can't live off that.

Sometimes it scares the daylights out of you when the HR person cocks their head and says, "Why do you ask?". Frankly you have the right to know all your benefits. Most companies provide employees a booklet containing all of their benefit information. What you want to know should be contained within such a booklet. If your company doesn't have one just tell them you want ALL your benefit information so you can keep it on file.
Don't let them scare you!

My employer knows I have CF. It's been hard to hide lately. They've worked with me very well on issues. I was just out of the hospital for 2 weeks and had to have my 15th sinus surgery (3rd in a year and a half) and they have been very accomodating.
