I am too late to appeal the last time I applied so I have to start over. Could use ANY advice! I have looked at the links that Julie wife to Mark(I think that is his name) has given on the site, so I do have that info. Thanks!

Jennifer, are you intersted in seeing the daily log that we kept (only for 2 weeks) so we could show the judge and doctor at the hearing. It really helped to show them that EVERY day consisted of 2-4 hours of various CF related treatments in the morning, and then again for 2-4 hours in the afternoon. I also kept track of EVERY lung infection that required nebulized tobi or colistin. If you have ONE lung infection once every 6 months, and are put on TOBI or colistin (or both) for it, you automatically meet the criteria. The other two are a little more difficult to meet for somewhat healthy CFers. If you are intersted I can email them to you, email me at division902@hotmail.com.

SSI is supplemental security income and is based on all income of everyone in the "household". They take the total income, and compare it to the "allowed" income for however many people are in you household. The maximum varies from state to state, but the maximum accross the board is in the $700's and in CA it is in the upper $800's because SSI recipients in CA can't get food stamps so it is subsidized in their SSI. YOu do not have to have any sor of work history to apply and be elgible for SSI.

SSDI on the other hand is Social Security Disability Insurance and IS based off of your work history. Every quarter you work equals a certain number of work credits, and at every age increment (I believe starting at 22 is what they list on the SSA website but they do calculate it for earlier) different work credits are required. The # of credits just keep going up and up as the age increases. There is no maximum on your benefits-like SSI has-because it is based on how much money you made when you were working (kind of like how your SSA retirement benefits are calculated). For someone who has no work history or not enough work history, there is a way to recieve disability benefits off of your parents/guardian, but I am not clear as to how that effects their benefits when it is time to retire.

MY BROTHER IS 22 YEARS OLD, WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CF AT THE AGE OF 4. HE RENTS A ROOM OUT FROM SOMEBODY"S HOUSE. HE RECIEVES $700 A MONTH FROM DISSABILITY WHICH $375 OF THAT GOES TOWARDS HIS ROOM, THEN HIS CAR PAYMENT IS $250. OUR FATHER PASSED AWAY IN 1987, AND OUR MOTHER LIVES IN OREGON, WE ARE IN CALIFORNIA...HE IS A 3 HOUR DRIVE FROM ME AND COMMUNICATION IS VERY LIMITED WITH HIM BECAUSE HE IS VERY BITTER AT THE WORLD INCLUDING ME BECAUSE HE IS SICK AND I AM NOT.... THAT THATS A WHOLE NOTHER STORY...I AM WORRIED ABOUT HIM.. DO U KNOW IF HE QUALIFIES FOR SSI, OR SSDI WHEN HE IS ALREADY GETTING DISSABILITY????ANYONE KNOW?????HE HAS PRETTY MUCH GIVEN UP ON LIFE. HE SLEEPS HALF OF THE DAY, AND DOESNT WORK BECAUSE HE HAS ABSOLUTE NO ENERGY, IS VERY WEEK(ONLY WEIGHS 89 LBS) AND HAS NO MOTIVATION TO DO ANYTHING...IT IS A VERY SAD SITUATION, AND I WORRY.HE IS SUPPOSE TO GO TO CHILDRENS HOSPITAL EVERY SIX MONTHS( BECAUSE THATS WHERE HIS DOCTOR IS AND THEY LET HIM CONTINUE ON GOING), BUT HE DOESNT EVEN DO THAT ALL THE TIME..WHEN I TRY CALLING HIM, 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 I GET A HANG UP......GRRRRRRRRRRRR

Have you tried looking into about getting surviors benefits? I believe SSDI is the same as disabilty. Unless the $700 a month is from survivors benefits then he can also apply for SSDI. I dont know I could have misunderstood it all!?<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">

I believe that he can get both, but am not sure what the guidelines are. Check out the website that was mentioned above and see if that answers your questions.

In california the maximum amount that a person can recieve from SSI benefits is 880 (maybe a few more or a few less) because california supplements "food" into their SSI benefits and an SSI recipeint in CA IS NOT elgible for food stamps. So, if his only source of income is the $700 that you listed, he could potentionally get up to the SSI maximum. What kind of disability is he recieving? If it is SSDI, he should be able to look into survivors benefits (as someone else mentioned).

Jennyslim76, I will email you along with the daily log and the social security impairment listings for CF. I have also posted them on this site before so I will try to refresh that topic-I can't remember if it is on the adults section or Families but it says Social Security please read.
