Applying for SSDI?

We are thinking about applying for SSDI for our son (he is 2 w/CF). We have not done this before because our income is way over the guidelines and I would have to quit my job to qualify. (I do love my job and have no problem working.)
We are thinking about this now because my current babysitter is not going to be able to keep both of my kids and the childcare expense for the 2 is going to be outrageous. (I am due in March with baby #2) We need my income to pay the bills but by the time I subtract all the expenses I am basically going to be working for daycare and health ins. In our state the SSDI would also qualify my son for Mediciad so I would no longer need the health insurance.
I just wanted some thoughts on what you guys think and what the process was like? I don't want to mooch of a system and I worry that it will look like that is what I am doing by leaving a good job to get help. Thanks.

I guess you pretty much said it. You will be working for child care and insurance. Your children will love to have mommy home I would think. I vote for staying home. I applied for ssi for Damien it took me 6 months. It wasnt that bad for us alot of paperwork to send fill out and resend. I did mine all over the phone and threw the mail. I am glad I did it. <img src="i/expressions/sun.gif" border="0">

Good luck! I tried for my son, almost 2 w/ CF. I was denied, tried again, was denied again, and now have to appeal through court, and may need a lawyer. They keep telling me that although my son's CF "causes him some problems", its not a "marked and severe impairment". Uggg!

If you do go for it, Beth Sufian is awesome. She's a lawyer with CF herself who does a lot of SSI cases. She said I can send her my son's records and she'll review them and see if she thinks we have a case. Also, Julie helped me quite a bit, hopefully she'll see this. I suggest getting copies of all your son's med. records. They had me send in the same info over and over, and kept asking the docs/hospitals for the same records over and over. I hear they usually deny the first time, so always APPEAL, APPEAL, APPEAL! I'm on the verge of giving up myself!

RiRi wouldn't u first have to quit your job to qualify for SSI which can take a couple of years to get, and u said u would not need insurance after SSI. What will u do for insurance before u get approved, or if it even does. Cobra will be $500-600 a month and what will u do for insurance for your other child. Just some things to think about before u go and do it.

I also wonder if giving up health insurance for SSI only makes it difficult to get health insurance back without pre-existing conditions being applied for a full year??? Does anyone know if medicaid coverage counts for constant coverage or if it is like having a gap in coverage?

Alyssa- Medicaid coverage does count as health coverage with HIPPA laws so there would not be a gap in coverage. (We will be applying for Mediciad after the next baby is born.)
2perfectboys- Since I will be on maternity leave I will not be making the same income that I was. The social worker at my clinic said to file for Meicaid for both my kids then. That way I can claim my current income which on maternity leave will be a lot less than I am making now. I was told if I can file the paperwork (SSI) during my leave I can count that as my curent income. Not what I would be making when I return to work.
Also I pay around $700 a month now for insurance premiums through my company. So dropping them from coverage would be nice in order to have that extra cash on hand. That income is already counted as gross income so the money going into my pocket instead of paid out to premiums will not effect my gross income.
Hope all this helped. After wrote it it seems very wordy!
