Just make sure you have all bank information, check stubs, and any other income you receive. Let them know how much in all your bank accounts, need to know how much your house payment is, how many vehicles- in Ohio you can have 1 "considered" good vehicle and another older. Take all medical information you have on your child, doctors phone numbers, I actually called the doctor and got the run off of all his doctor visits and hospital stays- that helped alot. Hope this helps.

This may sound extremely stupid, but it happened to us. Austin's "attorney" (She's no longer on this case) never asked to see him in person. The first time she ever saw him was 5 minutes before we went in to see the judge. Before Austin even got a chance to sit down, the judge told him that he looked pretty darn good for a kid with CF and that he hated to say it, but he was probably going to deny him. We went through the formality of all those questions anyway. Surprise surprise, he was denied for the 4th time. When it was over, his "attorney" said that she wished she has seen him before that day. She said she would have saved us a lot of time. He is now 16 and still is not on SSI. I wish you all the best of luck and don't do what I did please. I didn't keep appealing and it's been 2 years since that day in court. I have to start all over again now that he has had his first bout with pseudomonas.

I always told the patients I had helped while working at our local hospital that they want proof of everything....including the color of your underwear. If in doubt take it. They cant complain abouttoo much, only too little proof.

I am going to be honest. I am a new mother and my son has cf...who is barely 4 mos old. He had his first pseudomonas hospital stay when he was 10 weeks old-he was there for 3 weeks. He had a bronch and everything. I tried one time to see if he was eligible for SSI via the telephone. We were denied because of our annual income. So my question is...should I continue to appeal this decision or what should I do next. Do I have to wait until my son is older to really get any where with SSI? Also...like Laurel's son...my son doesn't look like he is a patient with CF...he looks like a baby who is in the 85 percentile for weight and length. Please give me some guidance on what I should do...this whole parenting thing is very challenging then to have a child who is SPECIAL makes it an educational process

Melissa, this is an idea but you would have to get a family member (your parents or your spouses) involved. Children can recieve 1/2 of an elgible Social Security Recipient's benefits if they MEDICALLY qualify. This way, you could earn $125,000+ a year (for example) and your child could still recieve benefits. It would be 1/2 of whatever the (usually grandparents) make a month.

The things I don't know (yet) about this situation are 1. How it reduces the person's social security (I don't believe it lowers their montly payments, but maybe shortens what they are entitled to over their lifetime? That's the only question I can think of now, but you should consult the SSA first on that question, and then if they dont' help you (which is likely) I would give Beth Sufian a call!

Theres more info about it here: http://www.cysticfibrosis.com/articles.cfm?article_id=100030

Julie, are you referring to Social Security Disability or SSI? I know that any of my dependants get a % of my SS (retirement or disability) up to a certain age even if healthy so I would imagine its along the same lines for a disabled child. The % that is limited is so the actual recipient whose benefits the child is receiving from doesnt go down. This applies to ex spouses, dependant children......all dependants! The amount I am referring to depends on work history and overall earnings of the person who the SS is drawn under.

I am sorry dustin but that is very bad, inaccurate advice. You just got lucky. These people all have very credible reasons for why their children are SSI elgible.

To answer your question Melissa, yes there is that portion of SSDI where for example, you are the CFer so your daughter gets a portion of your benefits. The catch I am talking about is this. Say you have a child, toddler perse who is ill and meets the CF disabilty criteria. But the mom and dad both work and make too much money to qualify for SSI, and a toddler can't qualify for SSDI because SSDI is off of work history credits. BUT, the catch is this... say the maternal grandparents of the child both recieve SSA retirement benefits. The disabled child can recieve a portion of the maternal grandparents retirement benefits, NOT subject to any of the parents income. It's kind of a way around the SSI system if you make too much $$$, you just have to find willing family members. Does that make more sense?

Julie-Thank you very much for your information. I was completely uneducated with how the whole thing worked. I will work on this more and see what I can get. I really appreciate your knowledge.

I guess my main ???? was if you were referring to SSI solely that would make the child in eligible & therefore try going under the grandparents. My point was if it was SSD then the child should collect under the parents work history because the income level isnt a factor. Thanks for clarifying!
