Applying to College

I am also applying to colleges. because I do a home cleanout twice a year (and often unexpectedly) its important that i'm close to home. i am looking at all schools less than an hour from my house and from my clinic (a half hour from my house in boston). however, if you don't do regular clean outs I would say as long as you are relatively close to your clinic. it all depends on how serious your care is. If I didn't have cleanouts all the time I would be going as far as possible and going to a clinic close by to the college. just make sure you research a new clinic to make sure you're getting the best care

As a mom to a college freshmen I think that I know what you are going through. My son is enrolled at Cornell University which is about 2 hours from my house and he decided to stay with his current Doctor and come home on his school breaks for Dr. appointments. So far he is healthy and doesn't need any tune- ups. He loves his school and his freedom. He adjusted quite well to doing everything by himself considering that everything was handed to him on a silver platter and constant reminders to do his treatments. I think as a mom it is difficult to cope with the fact that your child is away at college and getting the feeling that they don't need you very much anymore and when they leave for college, whatever they decide to do is their choice and you're always going to be their to support them every step of the way.

Good luck with the college search

it all depends on the severity and level of cf you have.If you are relativly mild and in good health i would say living to a cf centre is not that important, but obviously for someone severe this will not apply.
I also let the collage staff know i have this condition cos even though iam at the milder end of cf (fev1 70) i still feel cf impedes me ie things like coughing ,pysio and tiredness etc etc etc a big disadvantage when compared to someone who is healthy .The collage staff are also more likely to be aware of your condition(and how time consuming the treatment can be) and give you some space and flexibility ie more time for assignments etc when you are ill and pick up infections which obviously is a great help
