<br />I have only heard of a handful of people with CF getting their case revaluated 3+ years down the road. That is for stuff that has the potential to improve and until a cure for CF is found, that's never going to happen. I wouldn't put any time into worrying or thinking about it. I'm so glad you finally got approved!!!

Hello everyone. Sorry to jump into this threat to ask this, but it seemed like the most relevant topic for me to ask my questions. This question is for anyone who has been approved for SSDI. I recently left my job because of the demands it was taking on my health. In less than a year my baseline FEV1 fell 10%. I have just started the process of applying for SSD and have my interview coming up shortly. I have a few questions and would be so grateful to anyone receiving SSDI who would answer my questions.
1. How many times did you have to apply/appeal to receive SSDI? If you were denied, did they give you a reason?
2. Is there a PFT or FEV1 number that they look at to approve you? By this I mean, does my FEV1 have to be a certain number to be approved? Currently my FEV1 is in the mid to lower 50's.
Thank you so much to anyone who answers my questions!!

Congrats on getting approved JennifersHope. The last time I tried, I didn't qualify because of my CF. Granted, we are not military personnel, but we are in an active war, and have been fighting since the onset of this disease. My genes have been plotting to kill me since I was born. No general, colonel, or private has as much fighting experience as we do. We do not get a break; there are no times of peace, every second of the day is combat, and it's never ending. When you join the military you get a sign on bonus, but what do we get? We never signed on for this plight, and yet we are stuck with it for the rest of our lives.

I have osteopenia which makes it a bit more challenging to get around, nearly constant flatulence, diabetes which is a big hindrance on my lifestyle, not to mention a disease that is hell bent on making me a casualty. No, I'm fine, I don't need disability.<sarcasm>

Congrats on your approval!! It is bittersweet, but sure is a relieving feeling, especially if you had to use legal action. I was approved about 4 years ago and I was very fortunate in that I was approved within 2 months of applying and never was told anything about re-certifying. I believe the first payment was direct deposited very quickly.
I also get it for my daughter since she is my dependent, and I can't tell you how helpful the money is, even though it's been a few years I still sometimes have a hard time believing I was approved, I'm so used to be turned down by any other forms of help and assistance.

For those who have trouble with SSDI, I would recommend getting a doc that "gets ***** done". I was approved in 3 months, no hassle, no questions. The doctor is the one who writes how "bad" we are. With CF, ANY good doc should be willing to fudge the numbers to MAKE SURE YOU'LL GET APPROVED. I don't think I was lucky....I had a doc who spelled it out....MY PATIENT IS DYING. HE CAN'T WORK.

Jennifer, did you have to update your diagnosis code with them? It may be a good idea to let them know you don't have confirmed CF (if you haven't already) in case it may come back to bite you in the butt later. As for back-pay, I'm thinking they will only go back one year? Anyone else know the answer to this? Julie?

Lex: I thought they needed verification of everything (i.e. hospital records, copies of PFTs, etc) & wasn't aware the Dr could "fudge numbers".

Back pay goes all the way back to your initial filing date, minuse the 5 month waiting period. Mark got 27 months of back pay. I know people who have recieved 40+ months of back pay

You can also ask for a disability determination date EARLIER than your filing date, but you still have to meet the medical criteria, have enough work credits to recieve SSDI at that time, AND have earnings under the Substantial gainful employment level at that time.

LEx, wow, SHAME on any doctor who would fudge numbers. And for what it's worth, SSA could give a crap less what your doctor says or writes. It's about whether or not you meet the criteria- it's black and white in that aspect.

The only other way to qualify is if you don't exactly "black or white" meet ONE of the THREE CF criteria, but you have "issues" in two or three of the areas, or you also have digestive issues and you can argue beyond a reasonable dobut that the COMBINATION of your issues is AS BAD or worse than meeting one of the impairment listings.

Your case is unusual that your DR was able to get you qualified. That is not the case 99% of the time.

Just realized that this thread originated in Sept 2010<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">

Thanks for the verification, Julie. I agree on Dr's not fudging numbers & wonder how this could even happen. How do you change PFT numbers? Hmmm...
