i have over the summer picked up the aquarium hobby and have put together an oscar/cichlid tank. I got to thinking while posting another thread, is that all that good of an idea? with an aquarium, part of the idea is to have bacteria in your tank water because it helps convert amonias, wastes, and other contaminates to nitrogen getting them out of the water and it goes to the overall health of the fish.
My tank could be considered brackish because with the fish i have they like thier water a little saltier than others, does that help anything?
I don't know exactly what bacterias are growing in my tank, but with large aquariums, part of the filter includes thick slimy green algae (below the tank and water just runs through it)
They make UV sterilizers that will do in darn near every bacteria known to man, or fish, but they're more designed for aiding in disease fighting with fish and can cause "new tank syndrome" because of the lack of bacteria
Oh and of course, me with planning and all, the tank is in my bedroom, and there's an air return for the central ac/heat in my room

I wondered the same things when i had my aquaruium, BUT i also wondered the same things with ANY animal i have had. I have had numerous lizards for the past 14 years ( i still have 7) my cats are both 19 years old, and i've had just about every other type of pet there is in my lifetime and i've never had any problem with any of them , where my health is concerned. My advice to you is.... keep the water in the fish tank as clean as you can. You certainly wont be drinking the water,so there is no need for caution there, but any time you have your hands in the fish tank, whether to move a plant or to clean etc. just make sure to wash your hands afterwards. I think having a fish tank is a very rewarding hobby. I loved having them , they are so relaxing to watch and the sound of the bubbles always helped me to sleep at night.

I have owned many aquariums and never once have I been sick due to them. I do not clean them my husband does all of the work to them and filter cleans are done by him. I do feed them and get to sit back and enjoy them. I currently have a 110 gallon in the living room a Cichlid tank with about 25 of the little rascles.
I have a 100 gallon in the bedroom that contains a community of fish about 30.
I also have a 250 gallon pond in my back yard with about 40 gold fish in it.
My DR said as long as I do not mess with cleaning the tanks they are fine. We do 50% water changes every other week and filter cleans on the week we do not change the water.
I just wanted to add my two cents in on this. I must say though we are all diffferent so what works for me may not work for others. I have had fishtanks for over 10 years now.

Good luck with your new hobby it can be a lot of fun and relaxing also...
