Are children with CF more mature?

Having two girls with CF and talking with other mom's who's kids are around the same age as my girls or older about how our kids were I have to say, Yes, they do mature quicker.

I think our kids just grow up quicker because they ingest so much knowledge dealing with CF, medical prodecures, medications, and hospital stays. It's not just these things but I think because they deal wth all this stuff they just mature quicker in many ways.

How many "normal" kids can swallow a handful of pills? It seems like that is just the beginning. Our kids learn about mortality way too early. They learn how to stay in the hospital by themselves at a young age and they're OK with it when you need to run home and sometimes just tell you to go home at night because they have fun when you leave. We teach them to take their pills when they eat, how to know how many pills to take, how to put their treatments together and that all these things are important for their health. But at the same time we must remember to let them do kid things like go swimming, go camping, join scouts and go away to scout camp, sleep overs etc.

One advantage I've seen to all this is all they can draw on in writing papers. They come up with some of the most incredible topics.

Have to say that my son with cf is no more mature or insightful than my others at the same age.

I always said my daughter had a "wise soul". A few weeks ago at school, she had to fill in 3 blanks about things she feels. The first thing she wrote was "I.V.s" That made me sad <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
