Are there any diseases that are similar to CF?

Hi everyone,

I have a cousin that is in his early 40's that is dealing with a lot of lung issues for the past two years. Doctors found a mass in his lung last year that had to be removed and it turned out to be, I guess a ball of mucuous that couldn't break up. Last week they discovered another one. He has a vest & acapella and does them religiously, but he still can't seem to break up the mucous in his lungs. It's just like CF - very sticky, thick, and gummy.

They did a CF test on him a year ago and it came back neg.

Are there any other diseases out there that mimick CF when it comes to the sticky mucous in the lungs?

I'm not sure if they did a full panel genetic test on him yet, I'm in the middle of finding that out, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone knew of something that could be similar to CF?

there is some sort of bronchitis in china, or something like that, that creates cf type symptoms, that is where the research for using azithromycin in cf came from, it somehow comes from fish? i don't know much of anything about it, other than what i've just said, its something that my dr mentioned in passing one time when discussing azithromycin as opposed to ibuprophen. sorry i can't be of more help but thats the only thing i have to offer

With even a little bronchiectasis, the mucus can be a nightmare to get up. But that is just my impression since I am not comparing it to CF--my 23 gene panel was negative and my sweat test was 11. Nonetheless, when healthy, my mucus ranges from angel hair pasta to rubber cement in texture.

If your cousin has a cavitary mycobacteria infection (MAC/MAI), I would suspect that stuff could really get trapped like you describe. I once had a lesion of 1.5 cm that was a cancer scare but it turned out to be a "mucoid impaction". To be honest I am not totally sure what that means, but it went away. A sputum culture for AFB (acid fast bacili a.k.a. mycobacteria) has to be requested by the pulmo and takes 5-6 weeks to be complete.

Bronchiectasis has many causes (though >50% of cases are from CF): bad infections that damage the lung tissue, immune deficiencies that leave someone vulnerable to bad infections, autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, primary ciliary dyskinesia, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
