Are there any overweight adult CFrs on this site?

I was wondering if there are any overweight CF patients on this forum. By overweight I mean 40 pounds or more. You see I have been overweight for as long as I can remember. Back when I was about 17 or 18 I could loose about 10 pounds here or there. But ever since I had my daughter I have gained so much weight. And in return have gotten several lung infections since she was born. When I get sick and get that cough that just will not stop I get a horrible pain on one of my sides around my ribcage. I have also woken up at night about 3 times in the last couple of months like if someone was choking me (completly out of breath like if i did not get oxygen for a couple of seconds) I was wondering if there were any CF Patients on this forum that were overweight and had these problems or even those that aren't overweight that do have these problems then it's just the CF and not the weight.

40 pounds or more might be hard to come by, but there are a few of us who would actually like to lose weight rather than gain it - me being one of them!

I know it's hard to find here on the forum since i know CFrs tend to be trying to gain weight. But i can't believe i am the only overweight CF patient...now i feel worse. I know i can find a few pounds...but there aren't any overweight.

So guys, any ideas if my problems are because of my weight or my cf?

Ooh i don't take enzymes or steroids...i have no excuse except i guess i love Coke Cola.

I don't know whether you problems are from your weight or cf, but some cf docs like to see their patients (ideally) about 10 percent above normal in body weight. I myself am way below normal weight and am constantly trying to gain.

The more important issue for you is how well you are functioning physically. If you're 40lbs overweight you probably aren't working out on a daily basis. You need to exercise if you have cf, regardless of your weight. My advice is to hit the treadmill and start by getting 20 minutes of cardio everyday. If you can't do 20 minutes right now work up to it. But get your heart rate up for sure. I would also say to make sure you eat healthy. Sounds like you're getting plenty of calories so try eating healthier foods as opposed to the normal cf high fat diet.

Generally speaking you should be pleased if you are slightly above normal weight...that's good for cf and you'll be healthier. Just start exercising.

I am one of the ones that would love to lose weight. I am not over 40 lbs overweight, and right now I'm pregnant so I don't care about it currently. But I am 5'3" and 137. Pre-pregnancy I was 128. I'd love to be 118. We'll see after the baby is born. I'd like to be slimmer, more toned. I'd like to be able to wear a 2 piece bathing suit confidently, without this tire around my tummy. All of my extra weight gathers around my midsection-my legs and arms are stick skinny. They don't match the rest of my body!
However, I am more concerned about my overall health than my weight. And my doctor wants me to have extra lbs on me for me to breastfeed. So for now, my body image takes the back seat. After baby, I want to get in better shape.

thank you for starting this thread, Clara. Weight has always been an issue for me. Because of all of the years of antibiotics I acquired a candida (yeast) infection. When I went on the de-yeast regimen I lost about 20 pounds and my puffiness went away. The biggest change was eliminating wheat, dairy and SUGAR from my diet - but that was before the CF diagnosis .... and now I have let the dietary vigilance slip and am about ready to de-yeast again. There is a lot of information about this problem at yeastconnection.com
My CF care team never thinks it's a problem when I gain weight between visits.
But I do!
