Are there any overweight adult CFrs on this site?

thank you for starting this thread, Clara. Weight has always been an issue for me. Because of all of the years of antibiotics I acquired a candida (yeast) infection. When I went on the de-yeast regimen I lost about 20 pounds and my puffiness went away. The biggest change was eliminating wheat, dairy and SUGAR from my diet - but that was before the CF diagnosis .... and now I have let the dietary vigilance slip and am about ready to de-yeast again. There is a lot of information about this problem at yeastconnection.com
My CF care team never thinks it's a problem when I gain weight between visits.
But I do!

I was wondering if there are any overweight CF patients on this forum. By overweight I mean 40 pounds or more. You see I have been overweight for as long as I can remember. Back when I was about 17 or 18 I could loose about 10 pounds here or there. But ever since I had my daughter I have gained so much weight. And in return have gotten several lung infections since she was born. When I get sick and get that cough that just will not stop I get a horrible pain on one of my sides around my ribcage. I have also woken up at night about 3 times in the last couple of months like if someone was choking me (completly out of breath like if i did not get oxygen for a couple of seconds) I was wondering if there were any CF Patients on this forum that were overweight and had these problems or even those that aren't overweight that do have these problems then it's just the CF and not the weight.</end quote></div>

pancreatic sufficiency lends itself to non-CF weight gaining patterns.

take a look at your calorie intake every day and estimate how man you're burning by average daily activity.

if you decrease calorie intake and increase daily activity, you'll lose weight.

by the way, do you live in LA? you look familiar. maybe i met you at USC...

Well I really want to add maybe another 10 hours to a day to do everything i have to do on a regular basis...with work, picking my baby from daycare, coming home and cooking for my husband...let's not forget the treatments...but honestly i have to do something...

sakasuka,

Yes, i do live in LA and their is a big chance you saw me at USC my doctor is at that center. I also participated in some video they did and a conference they had at Children's Hospital in LA to Educate some parents on the transitioning from Pediatric care to Adult care.

tapia, get an ultrasound of your gallbladder. it sounds like it's gone bad. not only do you have cf (which predisposes you to gallbladder issues) but you are female and overweight - - two more prereq's. Read in my blog about my gallbladder removal if you'd like to learn more.

I am overweight also. Mostly because of high dose steroids and long term steroids. WHen I came off of the steroids I lost most of the weight. And then my doctor put me on Effexor and I gained more than I did on steroids!

Oddly enough I am pancreatic insufficient and need enzymes. I was very small as a child but once I hit my teens I've pretty much consistently been overweight.

LouLou,

I will definately tell the doctor to take an ultrasound next time i have this pain...but it's weird i only get it when i have a flare up. When i am having that non-stop coughing...so that is why i think it's the muscles around my lungs that are soar. And i wonder if i get that as well because of my weight. But you know next time i get it I will definately ask for an ultrasound. Thanks for the advice and i did read your blog...wow that was gross...

And in response to JustMurphin,

Dude at least you have an excuse...the meds...i don't. I don't take enzymes or steroids. I just love to drink soda...and i know they are bad but god the good things are always the bad ones for you. You know i can go without lunch or dinner but i need one can of coke at least...and that is not good.

First of all...you & your daughter are both so pretty<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
Second of all, when I was in my late teens/early 20's, I used to have a candy bar & a Dr. Pepper every day during my 2 breaks at work. I was slightly overweight--I remember my CF doctor telling me that I was getting a little chunky.

Anyway, when I quit that job & went to another company where breaks really weren't taken, I noticed that I lost weight w/o even trying & I suspect it's because I wasn't eating the candy/drinking the soda anymore. So the Coke could be part of the issue.
Like everyone else has mentioned, a little extra weight is a good thing..good to have that reserve. But with me, when I stuff myself at mealtime or if I get too big due to weight gain (of course right in my tummy area), I notice that it's a little harder to breathe...possibly weight pushing up on my diaphragm? So for this reason I try not let it get too out of hand.
When I've coughed a lot, my ribs do get very sore. I compare it to feeling like I've been in a car wreck, or I feel like I have broken ribs or something. It usually goes away after a couple of days.
I hope this has helped
