Ive been listed for over a year and have started to worry that the pain and side effects of the meds will trump the greatness of being able to breathe. I am still pretty active and have become paranoid that the anti-rejection meds will mess everything up. i guess im becoming pissed off and anxious about everything. i guess i need a pep talk lol.

Ok...Pep talk....Don't be crazy. I was anxious too, but let me tell you, dude.....it is so worth it, I would do it 500 times over.

I ran 3 miles with my wife yesterday.

I can play with my son without breathing heavy.

In Nov I'm running in the NYC marathon.

I don't have much side effects.

There was little to no pain for me post TX.

What else? <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hey there,
I was transplanted a little over 4 months ago and I have absolutely no regrets. It is amazing how much better you feel immediately after surgery and it just keeps getting better. I as well well pretty active until the day I was transplanted but I didnt realize until afterwards how limited I was. I had very little pain post-op. If this is a major concern for you, please talk to your doctor to discuss pain management options. My center had a pain team doctor on its transplant service, and she adjusted my pain medication as needed. As for the rejection meds, after the first few weeks I havent really had any side effects. Occassionally I get the shakes, which are mild and only noticable to me, and my blood sugars are high from the prednisone, but other then that, no problems. The ability to breath and run around without problems totally outweights the side effects of the meds.
Good luck and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Hey I had my tx 2 1/2 yrs ago. So far the side effects from anti-rejection drugs are very few, actually pretty much non existent. The only things I've had bother me are high blood sugars when I'm on high dose steroids, which can be controlled; I get shaky when my prograf level is high and I was shaky right after tx but it goes away; and the the moon face pretty much goes away as well.
As for the more serious, long term side effects like cancer...cancer is something that could affect anyone, no one ever knows.

There are risks in everything you do.
