I once had a new resident doc insist on performing an ABG. After digging around for what seemed like 5 minutes, I raised up my fist and told him if he didn't take the f*n needle out of my wrist, I was going to come across the table and break his nose!

At that moment, he got the artery. Amazing what a bit of pressure can accomplish!

Thanks everyone, for the replies and that link.
On a side note this will sound strange but I watched as they did the abg' and didn't feel anything...not even the needle break the skin. They didn't numb it either...pure luck it didn't hurt like **** I guess.

Garran had a central line in his artery so they could draw blood gasses when ever they needed to when he was admitted. They first had it placed in his groin area, and then moved it to his arm later in his stay at the ICU. I couldnt imagine having to hold him down for the other.

The only thing that has ever freaked me out about ABG's is hearing about them on this forum I have had them with no problems and no pain! I will probably be freaked out next time because of what I have read I guess ignorance is bliss for some things.
