ABPA does not show up on a culture. The mold aspergillus does. You can culture aspergillus and not have abpa..which is allergic broncho pulmonary aspergillosis. (basically an allergy to the aspergillus.) I had mentioned abpa to our doctor in Michigan a couple of times but she seemed to think he had more of an asthma component. I don't think he has asthma at all, but that his allergy presents like asthma. Andrew is on a prednisone burst right now for a decrease in pfts. We are starting there because with allergy season going on, and his last two cultures showing aspergillus, the prednisone is probably going to be more affective than an antibiotic.
Oh, and Andrew is on maintenance prednisone. He does the bursts when he is having problems.
Anyway, I feel for you. That dry, barky cough is so hard to listen to! You just know their little throats must hurt after awhile.
