Hi, just curious how you can tell the difference between the 2? My daughter has asthma but it is not the "normal" asthma and we are still looking for an answer as to why she is sick alot. Her sweat tests were borderline and genetic test showed 1 mutation so we had no help getting an answer there. I am just trying to manage her asthma and gi problems now. Sorry about the rambling, really just want to know what the difference is for you between asthma and cf. Thanks so much, Erin

GI problems suck like seriously ..i know how she feels (poor baby)...i've gone to the doctor about it and i've explained my symptoms and now i know how to tell if its asthma.....having cf puts alot of pressure on my lungs literally, it feels like there's a ton of bricks on my chest, i myself usually start coughin up extremely green thick mucus, now when im having asthma issues..my chest doesnt feel soo tight...i just weeze alot(not crackling lungs) just weezing..i dont cough up thick mucus from asthma..even when i get put in the hospital my cf will be doing just fine but dust or trees or anything like that will set my asthma off and once again i go to weezing..i wish i could explain on here what weezing sounds like but im not sure how..lol it almost sounds like a squeeky toy when i breathe out (weezing)..i hope this helps a little and if you have anymore questions i would be glad to try and answer them..

I have both as well and my asthma causes alot of whezzing, dry hacking cough where my CF I hear the crackling in my chest and the phelem pours out. Being in NY and the seasons chg. and the rainy days the weather can be a big issue at times. The summer when its too hot I feel as though I have to stay in the air conditioner to breath easy as my chest feels so tight the spring brings the pollen and the sneezing starts . But I think I have worked out for the most part alot of the issues and just try my best to combat both. I use Clartin or Symbcourt for the asthma and of course my albuertol inhalder. Beleive it or not there are acutally a few weeks thown in there that I can breath well without coughing or dry hacking. But I am older and sometimes for a child it is harder for them to explain, what they are feeling but if you put yr. ear to their chest you will hear the wheezing with asthma most times. Good luck. Sexxiej have you been feeling better? there were quite a few posts last 2 weeks and you were very sad and feeling terrible have you seen some imporvment with yr. IV's are you using o2 at night, it really helps. Pat-55/CF

Thanks for the advice!! She has not been diagnosed. We are in the waiting game right now. They want to see if the meds she is on will help control her asthma before they give her a diagnosis of cf. All the tests they have run have been borderline!(no help) And the full genetic test showed a rare mutation. I think its G576A or something like that. I will have to look back in my notes for that. As far as her not having the "normal" asthma, she doesnt wheeze, she doesnt having gasping or turn blue or anything that you would think is asthma. When I know she is about to get sick, she starts with a congested cough which she coughs up green mucus and after a day or so it turns into a nonproductive, dry, annoying cough. Then, she atarts with a low grade fever. If it goes on too long without the meds helping, her breathing is rapid and it will usually turn into pnuemonia. But, we have figured out to to treat it before it gets that far. I have stayed up many a nights counting her breaths before they gave me the peak flow! She had pnuemonia 3 times last year and a collapsed lung! The collapsed lung was in April and she has been pretty healthy since then. We go to the gi doc next week. Her pulmo wants to see if the gi can get her reflux and stomach issues under control and see if that helps her respiratory problems. Thanks for all the advice. I know I go on and on! Sorry, its nice to have this website for some good help!
