I was told that, ideally, you'd like to keep your 02 sats above 90. When my sats drop below 90, I can't think clearly, have absolutelyno tolerance for exercise and my back gets sore ( muscles between shoulder blades particularly). Do you have an 02 sat monitor at home to keep track of his sats? Sats lower than 85 is pretty serious from what I understand, and if maintained at that level, could lead to a host of other problems including pulmonary hypertension and eventually heart failure. I'm not a doctor, I'm just repeating what my doctor told me. Make sure your son's doctor answers your questions to your satifaction- he works for you. Any misunderstandings will only lead to unnecessary anguish.Good luck....

i recently had a sleep test to see if i needed overnight O2. i was told if the results came back that my Sats were dropping below 85% i would need oxygen. when they came back it showed i was spending most of the night with sats of 88%, and after much debate, the doctors decided to start me on overnight O2 anyway, to try and combat the severe breathlessness and very high heart rate that i constantly have. sounds to me like your child may need overnight o2, maybe ask your hospital if you can have a sleep study done and if an oxygen concentrator can be provided at home? if your child wakes up with headaches then definitely take action, this means that they are getting oxygen depravation during the night. hope that helps, good luck! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Your son may have a reason for the low o2 that isn't "just CF". Have your doc test some sputum cultures for microbacterium. I have two kinds and they have affected my energy leve and my o2. I just got out from a week long tune up today, and the microbac was really bogging me down. I was short of breath and worn out from the simplest things, all I wanted to do was sleep. I had some feaver in the afternoons. The good news is, I don't have o2 at home and only needed it for the first two days of my tuneup. They will reccomend regular o2 use when the pulse ox doesn't rise and respond to treatment and stays below 90. But it may be temporary. The best way to stay on top is AIR WAY CLEARANCE!!! But check for microbacteria if regular treatments aren't improving things for longer than 10 days.Debbie22 yr old w/ CF
