Attempted break-in

This morning at about 4:30 I was woken up from the sound of someone trying to open my front door and I looked out the window just in time to see someone walking off. That was just weird, but a few seconds later I heard someone trying to force their way in through the back door! Whoever it was gave up pretty quickly but I'm still kinda paranoid about it.

Anyway, I just needed to spill, and I can't really tell any of my friends or family; I don't live in the best of neighborhoods in the first place, so they're worried about that already and telling them would probably just make them freak-out. (I live in Downtown Denver, so it is definetly is far from being the worst of places, but certainly not the best, either.)

I was never in any danger; if the person had managed to get in, I would have just grabbed the phone and called 911 as I left through the opposite door. Still, the thought of someone trying to get inside my house while I'm in it isn't exactly comforting...

Anyone else have this happen to them? I have had (when I was living in different places) people brake into my home and steal stuff, but never when I was actually in the house. When that happened, I was left with the feeling of being exposed and unsafe, but I guess since the person wasn't able to get in, this time l just feel a little paranoid.

Anyway, thanks ofr listening or whatever. =-)

Oh man thats awful, glad they weren't able to get in! I know if I were you I would be freaked out!

Off topic, but I am coming to Denver the 19th of may! My cousin lives there. Not to long ago she had someone break into her house, apparently they got through the doggy door! The only thing they stole was her laptop.

YIKES! Sorry to hear this! I am terrified of break ins as well. Although we don't live in a "bad" neighborhood, crime in Vegas is the worst I've ever seen/heard.... I'm glad you're alright.

Ha ha, ever hear of someone trying to break in through the doggie door and getting stuck? I remember hearing about something like that on world's dumbest criminals or something. I think that would be pretty scary as well, to come home and find half a person sticking out of your house.

Honestly, if anyone did end up breaking in here, there's nothing worth stealing. Though, I guess a particualarly dumb criminal could try to steal my meds....

Anyway, the whole thing is just some bizarre memory now.

Any fire arms in the house?
I would definitely have a hand gun nearby if I lived alone in an iffey neighborhood.
Or a good watch dog.
I remember early one morning hearing someone trying to get into our back door. It is eerie to get woke up to hearing your door handle rattling!
They didn't get in in my case either but it does make you feel very unsettled.

We had our house broken into when I was about 10 & that was an awful feeling. My husband & I had a drug arrest take place in our back yard the first summer after we bought our home. The dog woke my hubby, daughter & I up at the commotion which I actually thought was the neighbor. I am glad to hear that whoever it was didnt get in. The thing is that you never know why someone is breaking in. They might have stolen your meds thinking they could sell them. If someone is under the influence of something it can get messy. Stay Safe!

Jarod,

I had my house broken in a few years ago. I was living in the undesirable part of town too. I was working night shift at the time and was awoken by footsteps in my house around noon. Needless to say...a tiny bit scared. I laid there in denial for what seemed forever but probably wasn't a few minutes. I finally got enough gusto to get my gun, get out of bed to try to protect myself. Fortunately, the house was empty when I got up. Someone had cut the window out of the back door and unlocked the deadbolt. I replaced my locks with double-keyed deadbolts, got a big dog and a security system. The funny part is the dog is a big baby and the guy installing the security system said 95% of the security is the sign outside. So you probably would do just as well I you got a "security sign" to put in your front yard.

Anyway...feel your pain man. Hope everything works out.

Jarod,

Never happened to me, but I'm glad you vented it. NO sense bottling that anxiety, and a bit of fear and maybe some anger up inside.

Have you considered a deadbolt AND a chain? Maybe a knife by the bed too just in case-carry it with you as you are walking out the other door.

I'm sorry to hear this happened. You still ought to give the cops and heads up though.

Well, three locks on my front door, bars on all the windows and a wooden beam arcoss the back door, so I still feel pretty safe. The only time I get a little freaked out is when I'm in the shower (stupid Hitchcock).

As far as weapons go, i've got a baseball bat, but I think if anyone actually got in I'd be too afraid to use it... the same would be true of a knife or a gun, I think.

I'd actually love to get a dog, but my apartment is so small I would only be able to get a little yappy dog. =-) That wouldn't help much.

A security sign is a good idea; I might get a few fake stickers to put up.

Actually the little yappy dogs are the best sometimes. Since they are so yappy the burglers (sp?) end up leaving cause the dog is making so much noise. Where as most bigger dogs ppl can come and go and they don't make a sound. So a yappy dog isn't a bad idea. I think

When I had my car broken into twice in the same night, (Once at work, then again at my apt., so I realized after a few years who the culprit was!) many years back, I felt so violated, so I can relate to that feeling of someone breaking in.
In most cases, the person breaking in may be someone you know! Rare cases would be someone just looking for opportunity, like in the case where the guy got his rump stuck in the doggie door!
BTW, Mockingbird, I was nervous the other day while picnicing on the beach with the wife, had these pigeons circling us, and had the Hitchcock movie "The Birds" flash in my head!! That's when I wish I had a shotgun, or even my soft-air rifles!!
My Uncle used to live in a bad area of Detroit, and put a 2x4 across his door, but only to slow them down enough so he can pull out his .44 mag!!!
Ya know, it's so easy in CO to get a gun permit, with their squatting and old-west laws. My brother-in-law has a permit to carry a loaded weapon, and holsters his Beretta .45 frequently!
Not to say a gun is the answer to the problem, but properly trained, anything besides 911 (Problem in Japan, is everything is a**backwards! The emergency call is even 119!!) can be effective! I would be using a wooden sword in Japan, and if that happened, boy would they be in for a surprise!
Anyway, a little rambling, here. As I mentioned, You have the right to be as startled as you must be. I just hope you are able to make a few more measures to prevent anyone to succeed in breaking in.

YIKES!!

I get freaked out in my apartment too. The shower is the worst, cause sometimes I'll hear noises from another apartment or the hallway, and I can't tell if its coming from inside or outside the apartment. I've had someone try to get in my apartment about once every 5 years, and usually just someone not paying attention to apartment numbers, but it is very creepy.

I have these cheap alarms I got from Kohls (I think you get them at Walmart too). They are small and come in two parts. Both have an adhesive strip, so you peel and stick on either side of a door or window. They use a magnetic current, so when you open the door, or slide open the window, it breaks the current and creates an ear shattering alarm. Place them high up so they aren't in the same area as the door handle or locks. (Also works well with small children who try to sneak out).

Dibs Icecream....
The one where a guy is eating an ice cream cone, lounging by the pool reading sports illustrated (Swim suit)...His ice cream drips on the magazine, just as a pretty girl is walking by. She looks at him just in time to see him licking the inside of the magazine.

Hillarious, but maybe you have to see it to get it.

Excuse the pun, I think I'll get shot for this one, but what use are guns to you when theres an intruder? The US has the highest rates for death due to guns. If you interuppt an armed intruder and they see you have a gun as well, most likely they'll shoot you. If you shoot or kill them, you'll be the one in trouble. Are guns really worth the hassle? Sorry if its a little OT, and Jarod I would be a bit freaked out too if I thought I was about to be robbed!

I agree with you about guns; precisely why I don't own one. Besides that, if the robber doesn't have a gun, and I pull one out, then he takes it from me.... Well, knowing me that's likely what would happen if I did have a gun.

I like on the Simpsons when Homer has a gun, then Snake takes it from him, but Homer says, "Ha Ha! I still have all the bullets" or something, then Snake says, "Give me those bullets!" Then Homer says, "Okay! Don't Shoot!" =-)
