Hey all!

My name is erin, I'm 19 and I have cf. I'm pretty new to this site, and I think it's great, if anyone ever wants to chat, my s/n is plainjane192, I'm almost always on, so feel free to IM anytime.

Question...is anyone familiar with the airway clearance technique called autogenic drainage? I'm finding it to be uncommon with other cfers

Thanks, take care

Hi Erin!

I am also 19 with cf. I have heard of autogenic drainage, but I don't do it, do you? If you do, do you think it works well? A respiratory therapist started to teach it to me once when I was in the hospital when I was younger, but then as a change of plans I got to go home early, and no one ever taught it to me again. I do active cycle of breathing though, I think they might be a little similar, but I'm not sure.

I've been roughly taught autogenic drainage twice; but I find it's just too much effort for me to do as much as I should, and I just use PEP instead. It just requires too much thinking in mornings and nights when all I want to do is sleep!

Hello, Erin. I learned autogenic drainage several years ago from the clininc in Salt Lake, UT and I've been using it ever since. I don't know many others who do it either, though. When they taught it to me, they said it is mostly used in Europe, though I haven't met anyone from Europe who does it! =-) The clinic I'm at now, in Boise, ID doesn't really know to much about it, I think, because they're always trying to get me off of it. They really wanted me to start doing the vest, which doesn't work at all on me! Anyway, I don't think there are too many clinics out there that teach it, which is too bad, because it is really great.

For those that don't know too much about it, it is a bit like active cycle (I haven't done active cycle for so long, I've forgotten it, but I remember it was similar). Anyway, it is a way of breathing to work the mucus up from the bottom of the lungs to the top. Kind of hard to explain how to do it, but you are basically doing huff coughs on a certain part of the lungs at a time. It takes a while to figure out, but I found it to be really effective. Of course, it may not work for everyone, I don't know.

I think this breathing technique is great.

Jarod, I was surprised to hear that you go to a clinic in Boise. I am from Idaho but have always gone to the Salt Lake clinic. I didn't even know there was a clinic in Boise. Do you like it better than SLC, or is it just closer to you? I've always like the Salt Lake clinic, except for the drive to get there!

Hello, Becky. I definetly liked the salt lake clinic a lot more. It is the best clinic that I have been to, but now it is just too far away, so I go to the one in Boise. The one in Boise is okay, it's just the salt Lake one is better. I think so, anyway. =-)

Hi!
I just received a VHS from my RT that was put out by Advanced Respiratory (the people who make the vest). It is basically an informational video on autogenic drainage for healthcare providers. I found it interesting and though I've just started trying to do it, I think it works well. They mentioned at the end of the video for more info. to go to thevest.com website.... I checked it and did a search for autogenic drainage and it pulled up some articles, but honestly, I haven't read them. Hope this helps!!!
