Are you in the Richmond VA area? Saturday, March 28 at 4 pm, Children's Hospital of Richmond is hosting a great CF Family Education event with Michael Boyle speaking (he did the NACFC keynote last fall, fabulous) and me AND my teenage son talking about parenting kids with CF. I hope to see you there! PS: It will be a dinner meeting and is free and open to all CF families and friends throughout the state whether or not they are a part of the CF Care Center at VCU. Details are below.

On Saturday the 28[SUP]th[/SUP] of March from 4 to 9 pm, the CF Care Center at VCU, the VCU CF Family Advisory Board, industry sponsors and the Virginia Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will present the 6[SUP]th[/SUP] Annual Family Education Day. Exhibits open at 4 and the program will begin at 5pm. It will again be a dinner meeting and is again free and open to all CF families and friends throughout the state whether or not they are a part of the CF Care Center at VCU. The health and wellbeing of people with CF is the primary concern of the VCU CF Care Center and the CF Foundation — it is at the heart of all we do. To help protect the health of people with CF, the foundation’s Infection Prevention and Control policy for all of its events and meetings will be in place. Due to those precautions to prevent bacterial cross-contamination, CF patients themselves are asked not to attend.
The event is financially supported by a generous trust from the family of Tommy Abrams and a number of businesses supportive of CF care. The program will again include motivational and informational talks, dinner, and CF Care related vendor displays.

We will have two special guests this year. Dr. Michael Boyle is the Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center, and the Vice-Chair of the CF Foundation’s National CF Therapeutic Development Network. He is the United States Principal Investigator for the international clinical trials of VX-809 in patients with two copies of F508del. Dr. Boyle has previously served as Chairman of the CF Foundation’s Patient and Family Education Committee and the CF Foundation’s Adult CF Program National Quality Improvement Project. His research is focused on clinical trials for the development of new CF therapies. He will speak on the journey to deliver CF protein modifiers and correctors to all patients with CF.

Our second guest is Ms. Lisa Greene. For Ms. Greene, helping parents learn simple, effective parenting skills is a passion she discovered after she became a mom and realized how much help she needed. Especially as a parent of a child with CF. When Lisa's first child Jacob was born unexpectedly with cystic fibrosis, she left her fifteen-year career in mortgage banking to focus on taking care of Jacob. In her search for information and resources she came upon a parenting skills philosophy that changed life for her whole family. She has been sharing that same philosophy with others. She started out teaching it to friends and family, but she has since gained credentials as a facilitator and as a certified family life educator. As a public speaker and co-author of the book Parenting Children with Health Issues, she has brought her message to thousands. For more information, see www.TipsForCFParents.com. Her son Jacob is now 16, excels in 10th grade and is an athlete. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 15 and enjoys public speaking about CF. His mother notes “as busy as he is, he takes good care of himself and makes his health a priority.”
